My wifes jeep ( about 130k , never used as a tow vehicle)has just started to occassionally not go right away into drive.

We place the gearshift in drive, but it doesn't seem to engage .

Or at a stoplight, idleing in drive, when the light goes green , pushing on the gas revs the motor but the car acts like it isn't in gear.

Usually putting the gear shift in neutral , then back into drive mkes it work.

Also sometimes it sounds like it is slipping on a downshift.

I have an appointment to take it in tommorow, but was wondering how sick it sounds ?

Don't know anything about auto tranny's and it is way too cold in calli to work on anyway.

Thanks

Make sure the fluid is full first. Take a smell of the fluid to see if it is burnt. If it is burnt, you are looking at a teardown.
After checking the fluid level/condition, there could be a problem with the filter not sealing to the pump inlet completely, or if equipped, there could be a problem with the pressure control solenoid(s).
The last thing is internal leakage in the forward clutch pack or sealing rings to the forward drum, causing burned clutches.

Thanks for the info.

last week, I was out of town , my kid had the car ( the first time it happened )and I told her to take the car to a full service gas station and have them check the fluid .

So she tells me she can check it, and says it's ok.

I checked it this am and it was below the dipstick level.

Kids, gotta love them .

I had 1/2 a quart of dextron 2, so I put it in this am and the car ran fine all the way to the tranny shop. No burnt smell.

Hopefully they will find/fix the source of the leak and I will get off cheap .
