pressurizing the coolant (coolant shoots out of overflow bottle)
hydrocarbons in coolant
coolant in the oil
oil in the coolant
coolant in the cylinders (pull your spark plugs)
low compression (compression test all cylinders)
also do a leak-down test

yes when the car has been running for a while white smoke comes out of the tail pipes and if i run it somewhat hard the car starts to overheat and coolant starts bubbling(radiator feels normal and electric fan works)So most likely what do you guys think it might be?

Is there any way to distinguish a blown head gasket from a cracked head or block? If so then how can you find out? What exactly is a leak-down test?

The chances you've got a cracked block are right up there with GW gettin' impeached. It ain't happenin'. Is it blowin' white smoke when it's warmed up? From what you've posted though, it's toast.

In a leakdown test, you pressurize the cylinder using compressed air with the valves closed. The leakdown tester gives you a reading, usually in percentage, of what that particular cylinder is leaking.

The only way you will know if you have a cracked block (oustide seeing a OBVIOUS external crack) is by tearing the block down to it's bare casting and having it magnafluxed.

Just want to make sure, don't want to change the gaskets and put a cracked head back on. There is bubbles in the overflow tank and white musty smoke out of the tailpipes. Should we do the head gasket change, and just not worry about any cracks in the iron (unless we don't see any defects on the gaskets)?

If you're questioning the heads, have them checked. You'll need to re-surface them anyway, so why not be safe rather than pissed because you didn't check them and there was a problem?

Take a good look at the mounting (block) surface. Make sure they are clean and free of defects. Use good (fel-pro) gaskets, new head bolts, etc. Spend a lil time and clean it up right, you'll be thankful in the long run.
