um, you just "fixed" the symptom, not the problem.

if this is the same problem as your cold start post as before then the same thing happened to my friend last week.

unplug maf, ran fine.

plug in maf, wouldn't idle in park when cold.

replacing the distributor fixed the problem. Before that we cleaned the maf, and tried 3 different ones with no effect on the problem.

what exactly do i use to clean the maf, and what part of the maf do i need to clean (the connection in between the wire harness and the sensor?)?

Ok, so if it runs bad with the MAF plugged in and you unplug it and it still runs bad, wouldn't that mean that the MAF is bad?

the computer determines the air/fuel mixture by the readings of how fast the air is coming past the MAF sensor, if thats unplugged that it can't do much can it?

well apparently it doesn't know how fast the air is coming in when it is plugged in aswell, because my car runs like sh.. when it is plugged in.

unfortunately you cannot determine the problem just by going about it the way you are.

best thing to do is find a buddy with a good running 5.0 and start swapping parts until it works.

that is what we did with my buddies car and it ended up being the distributor and it had the exact same symptoms yours does.

The MAF is basically the brain of your EFI computer system. It tells the PCM exactly how much airflow your motor is seeing and what load your car is seeing. The computer uses that info to make the A/F ratio what is commanded by the PCM and also how much spark advance to give.

The reason it runs better with it unplugged is because the computer goes into "limp in mode". This means conservative timing, and a pre determined fuel strategy based on throttle position and RPM. It is definitely not the best way to drive your car around. It will eventually eat up your cats and maybe more. It is easy to clean, just undo the 2 tamper proof torx screws on top, then lift it out. DO NOT TOUCH THE WIRES. First look at the little white elements on the wire and see if they look dirty. Then spray it off with brake parts cleaner until the elements look white. This was the coolest trick when I worked as a smog/driveability tech for 5 years. After that just put it back together and report back to us. The next step will to pull codes after you check and do this. It is not smart to just start changing crap and guessing, codes help alot in giving direction if you are lucky enough to have any. Do you have a K&N air filter? Hope this helps.

you were very helpful, thank you! i actually plugged it back in today after i got out of school, and it seemed to drive well... However i had a problem, as i posted before, i need to hit the gas pedal a couple of time to keep the car on in the mornings after its off for a while... When i disconnected the maf meter i did not have to do this (it felt kida nice, and im sure my neighbors apprieciate it too). I will see if it drives like sh.. tommorow, and we'll see if it stays on, on its own in the morning... i'll let you know,,, thanks again.

I only ask about the filter since the oil used to oil up K&N type filters can very easily dirty up a MAF quickly especially if over oiled. Keep us posted.
