Hi all,

I got most of the way through upgrading the rear brakes on my '97 Saleen to Cobra spec (with the kit I purchased from diskbrakesrus.com). To upgrade to the Cobra rears, you need to pull the axle shafts and change the axle flange. It all went well, once I figured out that I needed to pull the ABS sensors off to remove the axle shafts.

But then I realised that the kit only contained the new axle flange, but not the braces that bolt between the flange and the diff (I believe these are called anti-moan brackets). diskbrakesrus said that I didn't need these brackets, but I wanted to ask here if anyone was running without them, and if they noticed any problem? From the name, I am guessing that they are not structural, so I don't think it would be dangerous without, but who wants moaning brakes?

Also, I've heard a lot of people recommend removing the dust shields - for heat dissipation I guess? Any drawbacks to doing this?

Thanks,
Chris (chris_tann@bigfoot.com)

ps - a lot of people have also said don't bother with the rear upgrade - I had ordered the brake upgrade kit with the Saleen (10.5") rear, but diskbrakesrus kindly sent me the Cobra upgrade kit - so who am I to argue? :->

I got the kit upgrade for the rear from them to. My kit doesn't have the bolt on bracket. You are refeering to the one that mounts from bracket to the axle housing. You should get it if you plan on hard driving. But it isn't needed for normal abuse. Also people remove the dust shields most of the time to run cooling ducts. Hell cool, and clear dust.

Which rotors did they give you? Which pads also?

I know my kit is using their nickel plated, slotted brembo rotors, and Hawk HP+ pads. It seems to be holding really well. I got 6 road races out of these pads, and the rotors look like they can go at least 6 more.

I got the slotted rotors, but opted not to go for powder coating. Just the regular pads, my car is a driver with the _very_ occasional track day, so I figured that Hawks would be overkill.

I figure that while I have evrything unbuttoned, I may as well spring the extra hundred and get the brackets... but you went without and haven't seen any problem, right?

Chris.

Ya, no problems. Its just a good idea if you got cash and time though.
