I'm going to begin building/ordering parts for my aluminum 427 Shelby block tomorrow and would appreciate some feedback before I start putting in my orders. Just an FYI, this cars primary use will be daily-driver/show/and some strip use. I am somewhat undecided as too the manufacturers of a few of the items, hence the ?( )? and am open to any suggestions and/or other possibilities towards the others if you see a problem anywhere in my setup. Here is a current list of what I've already got in mind....

-Shelby 427FE block bored and stroked to a 490ci
-Billet Rods (Oliver)
-Heads Stg 3 (Edelbrock)
-Pistons (CP)
-Crank "cast" ?(Eagle or Scat)?
-Rocker Assembly "roller" (Erson)
-Intake "victor" (Edelbrock)
-Cam "custom" (Lunati)
-Rods (Eagle)
-Distributor ?(MSD)?
-Wires (Taylor)
-Carb "850cf" (Devincy)
-Water-pump (Edelbrock)
-Bolt Kit (ARP)
-Clutch (McLeod)
-Aluminum Flywheel ?( )?
-Bell housing ?( )?
-Slave Cylinder ?( )?
-Starter ?( )?
and last but not least...
-Tremek 600 or 600rr

Thanks for all your help! [patriot]

You listed rods twice. If you go with the scat 900 stroker crank(eagle doesn't make one) they come with BBC size rod journals. I would think about getting a set of crower rods that is the only thing that will really kill your block if you break a rod(there are other things but that is the most comman on a FE) so spend the money there. Get JE pistons. Who's stage 3 heads Keith Craft offers about the best I run edelbrock heads on my FE and they are awsome. 850 cfm really isn't enough to get max power out of it either. for street driving it would be ok. I ran a 1050 dominator on my 474 427 FE stroker and it worked great. I have been building FE motors for 20 years now so feel free to drop me a line.

Sounds like a cool $25,000 by time you are done. I hope you already have that Shelby block in your possession. Other wise prepare to wait and wait and wait....... Why some much motor for something that is hardly going to see the track. Besides show cars need original pieces not race pieces leave those for us racers. Other wise sounds like it could be an 750hp-900hp motor. FE motors are the best looking motors with the most factory racing history out of any Ford motor. So thanks for supporting the dinosaur club we are slowly dying off. [Big Grin]

"Cars primary use will be daily driver/show and strip."

That about covers all possible ranges, lol.

Ya, I guess that was pretty vague description [Razz] What I was trying get across was the importance of reliability in this engine build. I'm just trying to make sure that there aren’t any week links in the parts bin for this block. [patriot]

graylx: this will be going into a Superformance Cobra

Don: We're planning on ordering the block this week (hopefully). The reason for the setup I described is because the person for whom this motor/car is being built wants a built motor that’s lightweight, looks good, and functions better "hopefully 600 to 800hp depending on cam." Is it over kill, yea probably, but he gave up the idea of owning a RennTec Sl600 to build this cobra, and I certainly don't want to give him any reason to regret his decision. The car will see some open track and 2 or 3 trips to the strip every year, so don't worry it'll definitely get to stretch its legs every once and a while [Wink]
Thanks again!

I'd talk to Mike Braun. That's who built Joe C's motor and he's really about as sharp as they come on the "big" motors.

I can get his number for you if you want.

So, have you infected someone else now? The disease is spreading? [Wink]

Sounds good. Hey if I had the money all my cars would have an aluminum motors including the lightning. If he has the cash then go for it. I hate looking at the repo cobras that don't have an FE motor. This one will be very nice to look at. I wonder what this motor will weigh?

BTW make sure you run fuel injection. That is the only way to top this motor off, and sill be 100% streetable. Just think a 500+ cubic inch FE that starts on first click, and runs like a champ plus has 800RWHP. [Eek!] [worship] [dance]

600 hp is a piece of cake. My 474 started first crank with the dominator. I run solid roller cams in mine. A all aluminum block FE will be pretty light. the car should scram Kieth craft sells FE stroker motors with aluminum blocks. They will push well over 600 hp and tons of TQ

Good to hear from you Jeff! [Smile] I've actually been in contact with Mike over the past couple of weeks and finally confirmed today that we will in fact be having him do the build. I couldn't agree with you more regarding his abilities and work ethic though, I feel very fortunate to have found somebody competent as him for this project! [Big Grin]

BTW: Though the "disease" seems to be flourishing just fine since you left, but BALA has been lost without its Yoda [Wink] When are you coming back to visit the old stomping grounds?

Don: I have considered a fuel injected system, specifically the FAST system but prices are in the realm of ridiculous. Do you have any other recommendation on quality injection systems that wont burn 10 - 12K out of our pocket?

Hmmm, guess I was a bit misinformed about pricing [Confused] Then again, I may have been quoted with the an "all inclusive price" which accounted for tuning, install, dyno time etc as I'm sure tuning something like this wouldn't be cheap. I'll definitely look into it! Thanks [Smile]

you could weld bungs in to the victor intake and it would work sweet.

Send the manifold to a good shop to have it set up for fuel injection. The fast system shouldn't be more then 3500 new. There will be another 1000 or so in TB and injectors. The Engine Management should include wide band, which will allow you to have it tuned anywhere. You can also make multiple programs; one for racing fuel, one for pump gas, one for N20, and one for whatever. [Wink] Trust me it is the only way to go for a high priced car like this.

The FAST setup with full sequential and wide band closed loop tops out at about $2500 or so and that includes the sensors.

The big block truck is using a Victor converted to EFI.

I'll probably be back "for the last time" around the second weekend in July. If you want to check out both the intake and the FAST setup on the truck before that, let me know and I'll make arrangements with Cherie for you to get in there and poke around.

FWIW, the July issue of Hot Rod on Page 124 is an engine along the lines you are building. 675 hp @ 6200, 505 ci FE, all aftermarket parts, with FAST fuel injection. They used a Genesis Iron block, but they make aluminum, too, 3500.00 Genesis block
I wondered about the cast crank, but Scat has a good rep.
Also, Sept 2002 Hot Rod had a 1300 HP, all aluminum, Vortech Supercharged FE....
