Well I have never personally done it (my car has alway been tuned to be on the "safe side"), but today is the first time I have blown a headgasket (I hope it is just a headgasket). Long story short..I was doing speed bursts up 680 south (running it up to 5800rpm or a little below) and all of a sudden I notice that I am losing power...then as I pull over to the slow lane I notice billowing clouds of white smoke and then the temperature guage starts to quickly rise to right side of normal! Darn..what's the deal? I pull over off of 237 (with the heaters on full blast) and pull into the Embassy Suites. I park it and pop the hood and notice that the coolant overflow had about a half cup of fluid spilled over it and that the coolant in the reservoir was definitely dark and almost full(as if oil was in there). Other then the rough idle and small spillage of oil/coolant near the overflow bottle..there didn't appear to be anything broken or damaged in the motor compartment. I checked the oil at the dipstick and the oil appeared to be normal...wasn't cream colored or anything...
Anyways..towed home and started up for only a couple of seconds to see if the motor was still alive (not siezed) and it started up fine, but kind of idled funny. I never replaced a headgasket before, but it shouldn't be too hard, right? Anyway..your expert advice is needed:
*If it is only the headgasket, which one should I use for stock iron cobra heads? I am assuming I can get better head bolts (arp) to bolt the heads back down. How much would it be to port the stock gt40/cobra heads while it is apart? What are the complete list of parts needed for this headswap?
*If it is not just the gasket..as in the heads itself, which replacement heads should I get (I don't plan on changing the cam or anthing) so that I can reuse it for a future motor as in a 347 in the next year or so? It will have to be a bolt on affair as this in my daily driver and I cannot afford the downtime.
*Last question..if I scortched a piston what are the symptoms of that?
Thanks for any information guys..I just need to prep this and get as much information before I dig into the motor. I've never been past the intakes before so going to heads and beyond is all new to me. [ March 15, 2004, 07:42 AM: Message edited by: CobramanPhil ]

Do a compression test first to get an idea before you start tearing apart the motor...
*It might be a good idea to have your heads O-ringed for a better seal and lower risk of head gasket failure...A good machine shop will check the heads for cracks and seeing if they're warped at all before they start work on them...
*If you change your heads I would get AFR 165's or AFR 185's....I'm sure head choice is debatable, cause there are tons for a 5.0...

If it was a head gasket then FelPro 1011-1 or 1011-2 should work. You can get new 7/16 ARP bolts for under $40 and the gaskets should be around $60. Most places have stages of port work such as stage I, II, III, etc... Just as a ball park figure it would be about $300, $500, $700 respectively depending on which stage you want and how much power you want. If you replace heads stick with AFR 165's, TFS Twisted Wedge, or the newer versions of Edelbrock Performer as they will usually bolt right on with new rockers. If you had torched a piston chances are your car would be consuming an excessive amount of oil. Hope this helps.

Don't run arp bolts run arp head studs. First thing you need to do is have a leak down test run to find out which side let go. This way you can change just the side that blew. If you want to do head work and both sides are coming off than personally I'd step up to AFR 185's since you've got the blower on there. The difference in power verses your gt-40's could net you approx. 30+- horsepower. O-ring which ever head and run fel pro lock wires head gaskets. Don't forget to re-tune after. This most likely occured because something failed since it already had a good tune. Check over the fuel system and make sure the T-rex is running

Ford racing sells a headgasket set for the 5.0 supercharged engine. It has there b51 graphite gasket stretch bolts(that on a stock block are recomended over studs buy Ford Racing) I blew a 1011-2 with 12 psi of boost and changed to this kit, so far so good.
