I am replacing my wheel bearings right now...I put it off for awhile after doing my 4 banger to v8 swap and now I have some time to do it.

problem is, when I get everything assembled back onto the spindle, the back of the rotor grinds against the mounting post for the upper peg where the caliper mounts. I.E. my rotor is too close to the spindle.

wtf?

I have all carquest parts:
inner and outer bearings, and new rear seals.

The seal seems to be a hair smaller than the old one that I removed, as it pops on and off easily, the old seal I had to pry off. But once on there is no difference in thickness.

Also, I believe the inner wheel bearing (larger) is not properly fitting into the race in the rotor, it seems to fall right through it, as the bearings came with new races and they fit differently than the ones in the rotor. The rotors are new within 500 miles.

Thanks for any help, I do have pictures of the issue, and I still have the boxes for the bearings. I tried searching carquests website but they dont have a listing for parts like other auto part stores do. My inner bearings part # on the box is A-17 if that helps anyone.

The seal on the back of the rotor is a press fit seal and it should only go on with a hammer and a seal driver. Removing it should require prying it out. Sounds like you got the wrong seal, and wrong bearings

do you happen to know the proper wheel bearing part #'s or know of a resource I could check to find out?

running searches on other message boards leads me to believe parts stores have the bearings listed wrong, and is a known issue as somebody referenced a couple MM&FF articles about the issue [Frown]

oh, one quick question to help me diagnose:

does the seal attach to the inner bearing? I see a groove on the seal that makes me think it should, but it does not come close to mating with the bearing that I have.

Just take your old bearings and seals with you tomorrow to the auto parts store. All the part numbers you need should be on the old bearings and seals

The inner bearing gets placed into the rotor than the seal is installed. Are you putting the bearings in the same way as they were? There not backwards are they?

the taper is facing into the rotor on both sides.

does the seal mate with the bearing? I realize the bearing goes in before the seal, but the bearing can bounce around inside the rotor even with the seal in place. I put the old seal back in to check and the same thing happens.

the reason for replacing the wheel bearings is the old ones made a grinding sound, which appears to be the same issue I have now, I think the previous owner of my donor car installed new bearings that were wrong and didn't realize it. The old bearings look just like my new ones.

hence my confusion.

It's normal for the inner bearing to move around when the rotor is off the car. The bearing is held in place once the rotor is placed on the spindle. No the seal doesn't mount to the bearing. One of two things is happening here. Either you got the wrong parts or something isn't going together properly. I'd take the rotor, bearings and seal to the auto parts store.

and again if you can remove the seal and install it by hand its the wrong seal period
