Basically it detects detonation (or knocking) in the engine and then retards timing until the detonation is gone.

like a rod knock? or just detenation? like carbon buildup or some shit? does this indicate there is something terribly wrong with the car?

It is specifically 'looking' for detonation (pinging). It may be so slight that you can't hear it but the sensor will pick it up. It does not necessarily mean that there is something terribly wrong with your car. It could just be a timing issue, a need for higher octane gas or a faulty sensor.
Did the SMOG tech give you any other indication of why you failed or just that it was your knock sensor. Did he say it altered the timing too much or anything?

I wasn't there so I'm not sure...I do know it was at a "test center only" place. So maybe he was just being anal? The lady I'm buying the car from is having another shop install a new knock sensor/o2 sensor (I have no clue which is which). In any case her honda mechanic said he will replace what is needed until it passes smog then give her the car back to take to the test center. I figure if it passes and I buy it I'll have 90 days to resell it for twice what I bought it without me having to smog it.
$1500 1992 Accord I think they are going from anywhere between $2,200-$3,500.
I do want to keep the car so I'm hoping its just a bad sensor and that can be replaced,..and not the sensor picking up something within the workings of the car that is bad, you know.

rice it up and sell it to some little asian kid. you don't even have to paint the body kit, you can get the air filters that are big as coffee cans at walmart, and you can use your old Folgers can for a muffler!

I'd rather waist my money on something else.
