Since I can't find a motor+T-5 combo, I'm beginning to look at rebuilding my '88 302 motor that came with my roller. I'm will be using the stock heads and front accessories. The machine shops around Vallejo aren't really performance oriented. I'm just looking to freshen it up with forged internals and 10:1 CR. Here are my Q's..
Anyone recommend any motor builders/machining shops or places I should stay away from?
Any one recommend any rebuilding kits? Summit sells one for $450 = crap? Would D.S.S's $550 kits be more reliable?
Would a shortblock from D.S.S or F.M.S be a better decision?
How much should I be looking at spending?
If I get the block machined and rebuild kit balanced, would installing the rotating assembly myself be too hard/too much $$ for the extra tools? [ October 08, 2003, 04:08 PM: Message edited by: 88DroptopGT ]

Ive had good luck with my mail order shortblock. Mine came from central coast mustang. If i had more dough when i swapped(and had it not been my daily source of trans) i would have had a trusted local guy build me an engine to my specs. Machine service& parts in lodi does great work but a bit far from you.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 351 out of my '88 Bronco, so this'll give you an idea of which way you might want to go.
Machine work for block was $737 bore .060 over hot tank magniflux install cam bearings, freeze plugs & oil plugs install rods on pistons resize big end of rods (new rod bolts installed) magniflux crank grind crank .030/.030
Machine work for Heads was $389 resurface head 3 angle valve grind new hardend seats installed gasket match exhaust ports install new oil plugs
Parts ordered from PAW was $904 new speed pro hyperurtectic 9.4:1 pistons hastings crome-moly rings clevite 77 rod and main bearings comp cams 250 duration cam w/lifters complete gasket kit one piece oil pan gasket ARP Head Bolts ARP main studs ARP rod bolts melling HV oil pump misc. odds and ends like tranny pan, etc.
In retrospect, I should have just bought a crate motor.

Summit's rebuild kit is a good deal. It's not like they use summit parts, they put together a kit with a bumch of other brands depending upon what ur set up is gonna be, they sent me Speed Pro forged pistons. I'd recommend them for your typical rebuild.
