My HC and CO were perfect, no problem but my NO was bad. Max is 942 at 15 MPH but my car measured 1389. The car has a stock engine with stock timing, all other mods are in sig. My question is, what can cause the NO reading to be so high?

Try new O2 sensors. What thermostat do you have? If it is 160 or 180 change to the OEM 195. If that dont do it, you have an emmision sensor problem.

I'd say run it hot...go in after a drive and immediately test it. What about a tuneup? New plugs, filter..etc.etc.... Retard the timing maybe too or at least make sure it is at stock (10).
Good luck...

Wouldn't bad cats make the CO levels go up? I thought were to burn excess CO from your exhaust. Anwyas, I have done a full tune up about 2 weeks ago so that shouldn't be the problem. I just scanned for codes and I got 22 which is a bad MAP sensor? Could this lead to high levels of NO? Thanks for the help everyone [ October 08, 2003, 01:42 PM: Message edited by: Strike One ]

I just went through this with my car. I advanced the timing so it would run leaner, new O2 sensor, ran on 87 to burn cleaner, new egr, leaned out the carb, and ran with some denatured alcohol in it and it still failed. With the NO, the hotter the car and the cat is, the higher the readings. So if you passed carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons by alot, try taking the test with the car a little cooler. That still didnt work for me so I my buddy who works at a dealer make me a fake recipt for $300. In ohio, if you show the station the recipts for over 300, you get a waiver and you have another 2 years.

Well, I don't know. Since my car is pretty much stock, it shouldn't fail. I would rather fix the problem than pass the test without actually being able to pass.

All I have is exhaust... The just put the limit on the NO in the begining of september in ohio, and I talked to a guy at the dmv, and he said that the limit was too strict, and that it was probably going to be changed. When i fixed everything else, the NO levels went up

High NOX readings indicate combustion chamber temperatures are too hot. The function of the EGR system is to help reduce combustion chamber temperatures. The new smog test no longer requires the technician to test the function of the EGR system since the new test also reads NOX. I would check EGR function first. Pull the vacuum line from the EGR valve and apply vacuum there to hold it open. The engine should stall or stumble. If not, then the EGR valve is not functioning or the EGR ports are plugged. If the engine does stumble, check and make sure vacuum is getting to the EGR valve (you should be able to feel vacuum pulses from the hose that was disconnected from the EGR).

Gotta agree with saleen fan, check egr function, mabye remove egr valve and inspect ports, poss plugged, also find someone w/ a code scanner see if it has codes, i believe that low 30's codes ie. 31, 32, 33, 34,... are egr function codes. Check egr actuator and vacume lines located on backside of r.h. strut tower.

Listen to Saleenfan and 88bird!!!!! Excessive NOx is caused by excessive combustion chamber temps, basically the leaner your car goes the more NOx it will produce. Testing it hot, getting it to run hotter, advancing timing and using lower grade fuel are all things that will INCREASE NOx emissions. The EGR systems only job is to decrease combustion chamber temp and reduce NOx emissions, check to make sure it is working properly and the passages are not blocked. If your still on the border after this, test the in the morning when its cooler and run higher octane fuel(91, good quality 76 or Shell). Oh and if the air temp at the time they test your car is over 72 degrees make sure they have a fan blowing on the front of your car, its the law and could increase your NOx readings a bit. Hope this helps! [ October 11, 2003, 06:23 PM: Message edited by: Jimbo ]
