Tonight while cruising to the track my car DIED! [Mad] Everthing was going fine and then it had a slight hiccup and all power was lost. I merged over and came to a stop and popped the hood. Nothing looked abnormal. I go to restart the car and it cranks but won't start. I get the car towed home and check the fuel pump. I stick the key in to prime it and it won't stop (it's running continuously) . Under the hood I hear a loud like "hiss" while the pump is buzzing. Take the key out and it stops. Anyone know why the car doesn't prime for 2-3 seconds like normal? Also why the car won't start/run? Thanks for any tips. Not sure what to try first.

I have analyzed the fuel pump circuit closely because of my own problems. The fact your car doesn't start, even though the fuel pump is continously running points the finger at the EEC relay first. Its a grey relay next to the wiring harness that plugs into the EEC. That rushing sound you hear under the hood is just the fuel pressure regulator releaasing fuel back down the return line.

I'd check the following roughly in this order:

1) reseat or try removing your autologic chip

2) check the EEC relay

3) Check/clean the EEC wiring harness connector (similar to cleaning 10-pin connectors)

I'm looking at that stuff now. How would I know if my relay was bad? I'll try resetting the chip and cleaning the prongs on the relay right now. BTW, what would cause the pump to run continuously? And if the pump is working then why won't it start?

Try removing the chip all together at first. I can think of three reasons the fuel pump will run all the time:

1)Stuck fuel pump relay (the car will start like this though)

2)Stuck EEC relay. The EEC relay controls power to the O2 heaters, fuel pump relay, and various sensors on the car.

3) Malfunctioning chip/EEC. At the end of the line, the EEC controls the EEC relay that controls the fuel pump relay.

As for testing a relay... you're probably better off swapping it and seeing if the problem is fixed. You need a multimeter and 12V power supply to test a relay....it can be a hassle.

The weird thing is while the pump is running I'm getting fuel pressure on my gauge. Sounds like this is gonna be a PITA to fix.

Not weird at all, you're suppose to see pressure. I'll bet $2 that your chip came half way out or something while you're driving. I'd go remove the chip right now and fire it up. If not, replace the EEC relay. If not, replace the EEC (rare).

I'll try to start it without the chip. The chip was taped on, so it was secure, and I did reset it. I'll keep trying though [Frown]

Call over a buddy with a 5.O and swap relays, EEC, etc until you find the problem. It doesn't sound too bad. My odd fuel circuit problem turned out to be a flakey shock/impact sensor (forgot the real name of it) in the hatch.

Yup, Sean got the name of it right. I had a memory lapse last night.

Aaron- So what's the update on this problem? I doubt its as bad as you think it is.

Here are some wiring diagrams that may help:

I will have a look at it today. I'll have access to test parts from another car. I'll post up with what all was tried and if it's fixed. Fingers crossed.... Thanks for the diagrams

That's pretty rare, but not impossible. So your old computer with out the chip wouldn't start? At least the fix was simple.
For your chip to work, you need to replace your EEC with the same kind (A9L, 3CM, etc). I also want your broken EEC if you can hold on to it [patriot]

The computer that went out was an A9M. I took the chip out and the same stuff happened. I got an A9L and it worked. Stuck the chip back in and it still worked. Hopefully all is well.

I still have the computer. I'll hold on to it

A9M is just the california spec of the A9L. They're part of the same "family", and only have very minor differences. Because they're in the same 'family', you may be safe, but I'd shoot an email to byron asking if his A9M chip will work properly in a A9L.
