i have blowby and my intake sucks in oil from the pcv. i want to use a breather in either or both locations, but i dont want a vacuum leak and i want vacuum in the crankcase.
would this work? route a vacuum line from the intake manifold to the valve cover then get rid of the pcv and run a breather back there. i want a second opinion before i try cause i dont want all my seals to spew out oil ![[dance]](graemlins/dance.gif)

Im assuming you dont have a blower or turbo...
You should already have a line going from your TB to your valve cover. If you put a breather where the pcv is, your going to be sucking un-metered air into the intake witch will cause it to run lean. Dont do that.

91 5.0 is right.
One 'trick' you can do to not get as much oil in the intake is to remove the oil screen below the PCV. It has worked quite well on 91PONY's car.
Another option is to simply block off the PCV all together, plug the intake port that feeds it, & run 2 breathers on the valvecovers. Guaranteed to stop oil consumption.
Then there's what I run....& that is a little complicated to setup & absolutely requires a sealed crankcase. (no oil leaks of any kind)

93pony- How does removing the baffle under the PVC hole on the lower intake prevent oil from being sucked up? If anything, I'd think it would make it easier for the oil to get sucked up.
Hungryhippo- How many quarts per mile does your 5.O burn?

Try cleaning the screen out with a mild cleaner such as Simple Green. The screen assists in trapping the oil, so it's there to help.
Most times they are NEVER cleaned, so there's a few miles worth of oil trapped there. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Johnny, Here's the thing...Its great to have a vacuum to suck out all the blowby and get rid of the crank case pressure...With vacuum on the crankcase you actually gain horse power...
However, if your sucking oil through your intake like I did on my 94, disconnecting the PCV system all together will gain way more horse power...
Basically, I tried routing carb fuel filters to help aid with the oil comming into my intake from the PCV valve...It helped but restricted the vacuum and I got oil in there anyway... ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)
I'm running breathers on my valve cover and my PCV valve and the car runs better than ever... ![[patriot]](graemlins/patriot.gif)

There would be no point on the PCV valve side, cause thats what a PCV valve is, a "check valve"...Thats also where Hungryhippo is getting his oil too....
If you put it on your valve cover side, you eliminate oil getting in your intake from there, which is good, but you also eliminate much needed air flow through the crankcase to get rid of blow-by...

On the pcv side. I dont know if you've ever blown through the pcv itself, but they dont seal well. I was boosting the crankcase throught the pcv, plus whatever blow-by I was getting, not good. Breathers on the valve covers too. You could always make a catch can setup too. BTW, I vacuum capped the fitting for the recirc line on the oil fill.

I too, never thought pulling the screen under the PCV would make a difference....but when I pulled of 91PONY's intake is was SUPER clean....the heads on the intake side looked brand new....& guess what I found in the lower intake...no screen. I put a screen in & re-installed the intake manifold once I ported it. Less then 500 miles later I pulled the intake again to notch the pistons, install the cam, etc. There was a lot of oil in the intake. I've since taken out the screen.
My guess is the screen actually helped pull the oil closer to the PCV & it was sucking it in....& now that there's just an epmty air the oil stays just far enough away from the PCV to not get sucked in.

My car is supercharged... I just routed the valve cover tube to the inlet of the blower, rather than the throttle body. That way the crankcase is always seeing vaccuum, even under boost.

i dont burn too much oil, maybe 1 quart in 3k miles. i just dont like the idea of getting oil onto the valves and pistons. i put a fram fuel filter inline with the pcv, i havent checked if it helped yet. but i was at autozone today and their Duesch(lol) fuel filters are like mini catch cans. both the inlet and outlet are on top. i'm going to try one of those and cleaning or removing the mesh screen. it makes sense the mesh screen can help the pcv suck oil since it can get stuck in there keeping the oil closer to the valve.
i would like to run 2 breathers but a lot of people are saying that it can cause oil leaks after a few months. also oil vapors will get all in the engine compartment. oh man, i am babbling, this is the longest post i have ever made... i'm pretty drunk. whats funny is when i was driving home tonight my speedometer went out. it would only work when i'd go WOT ![[burnout]](graemlins/burnout.gif)
