I have always put 91 octane from the 76 station in my car. I was a little low on cash last week and went ahead and put in 89 octane from the same 76 station. My car has just the regular bolt ons and it's a 91' mustang.
Can your car actually lose hp if you run too high of an octane than you really need to?
I feel like my car is a lot quicker with the 89 than it was with the 91, or is it just in my head?

Yes you can. Higher octanes are harder to burn, which is what makes them a requirement for high compression or high boost engines. The higher flashpoint helps prevent/reduce detonation. Unless you need high octane I always recommend running the lowest octane gas you can without detonation (87).

Try 87 octane next. That's what I run. If it pings, stick with 89.
