You get tired of the noise after a while but you won't have to worry about a chain wearing out. If you really want to get technical chains are junk after 1000 miles. It takes them that little mileage to start stretching and cause a big variation in your cam timing.

Gear drives make way too much noise and are totaly unnessary on any motor. Some people say that timing chains start to strech and deflect after a couple of thousand miles. I say bull shit. When I had to replace the timing cover gasket on my 80,000 mile 5.0 a few years back, the timing chain slack was well with in specfication.

How about this:

A decent timing chain:$50-80
A MAC gear drive(which I've had for 2 years working perfectly):$99.95

How about this.
There is something wrong with my motor. It doesn't sound right. I wish I could here what it is, but all I hear is the gear drive!
If you like the sound it makes, buy it. If you plan on racing the car, stick with the chain.

Im sure many of you have heard my fastback run. Its a 306 that I built with a CHP gear drive. It cost 100 bucks new off of ebay. I liked it at first and got dozens of compliments (still do). It is very loud and you can hear it blocks away. I open track and auto-x my car and from the videos it was cool to hear the motor rev up and down with the gear drive. But after about 10k miles of driving it, I hate it and the new motor being built will have a really nice timing chain.
