i'm looking for a cam that will work the best with my combination: stageIII ported and polished gt-40 heads, gt-40 intake, 24lb injectors, 65m mass air, 70mm throttle body, 3.73 gears, small crank pulley, no smog pump, think thats it. im pretty clueless when it comes to cam specs and what will work the best. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance. .drew

Comp Cams XE270. Good match for that long runner GT40 intake.

Is your lower intake ported? If the heads are seriously ported you have more power hiding in the stock GT40 lower... [ July 22, 2003, 01:01 PM: Message edited by: FasterDamnit ]

the heads have a serious port job to them. how much would it run to port the lower? i don't have to smog the car, does that have any impact on the cam you recommended? edit: which cam type would work, flat tappet or a roller? which would you prefer, the xtreme energy cam or the dual energy? what are the pros and cons of each one? thanks for the help [ July 22, 2003, 04:16 PM: Message edited by: shiftylx ]

Well if you have a 5.0, and its a roller motor, than you would definately want to stay with a roller cam of some sort, if you go flat tappet you'll lose horsepower. ROLLER IS BETTER.

XE means Xtreme Energy. Yes- roller cam. If you don't have to smog then a cam w/ more overlap will boost the mid range and top end. Not sure on the price for the ported lower- look for used on the net and you could find one in the 300-400 range.

Ported GT40/Cobra lowers go for ~$150 or so. I agree, get a cam from the XE line. Anything above the XE270 will most likely not pass smog. Opt for the 112LSA cams, they'll make more power. The XE274 will work well without piston to valve interferance if installed correctly. Other compcams that will work well: Part # / grind # 35-430-8 / 280HR 35-450-8 / 286HR (piston notching manditory. Also valvesprings must be able to take .600 lift) 35-314-8 / 280HR (valvespring must be able to take .600 lift) 35-522-8 / XE282HR (piston notching required in most applications)
