Is this necessary on a rebuilt motor?, and how is it done?

With the distributor out, place a deep 1/4 socket on a long extension & place it on the oil pump drive shaft. Hook up a drill to the extension & prime in 'reverse' rotation.

I tape the socket to the extension to prevent it from falling into the pan. Had it happen once.

I was told to put vaseline in there to prime you oil pump.. Some old man told me this!!

get one of those things u use for the drill that u use to hook up the bits to it fits the shaft perfect spin it in reverse rotation till u feel pressure building

For 30 seconds after you see full pressure. This will lubricate the valve train, not just the bearings.
