well gone are the days of illegal smog (unless your uncle works for the main dmv office in sacramento heh heh)

the new smog stations will be a dyno. you will go on there and will test under load. now thing is that they changed the passing standards and they even said in the class all these ford taures with blown head gaskets that they had to mill down wont pass because of the upped compression the new system is very strict.

now this sounds like bs but the exhaust changed in anyway even muffler may make the car not pass. now heres the killer. the ca smog people are going to start to go after companys selling 50 state legal items after june of this year for saying legal in all 50 state if they did not test on the new ca smog. so pretty much the carb numbers are gonna be junk and also you cant put another car on the dyno cause there are certain numbers that they put in that have to match.

hopefully i heard this the wrong way but man i feel sorry for people that need to get illegal smogs now.

It's about time we have had it for 2 years, As well these freakin tets only stations. Dmv claims mustang 5.0 are chronic gross offenders due to modifications. They make you take it to a test only station so if it fails you have to go have it fixed elsewhere then bring it back for them to "certify" it...get ready to pay way more as well!

That's not true, I've seen a 120,000 mile blown head gasket taurus with heads milled 0.10 pass with flying colors on the dyno smog.

not to bum u guys out but it IS as bad as it sounds. my shop has our dyno and we are the cheapest in coco county at 80 bucks for the enhanced test. the test only req. is in effect as well. about 37% of all cars will be directed to test only stations. (which is why i'mm opening my own). the 5.0 IS a high emmitter profile car. for instance this past week i've tested 12 50's and 2 passed 7 were gross polluters. SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY FOR A PRETEST. ASK FOR IT. most smog guys don't even tell u that u have that option. [patriot]

Remember don't piss off you're local smog guy or misteriously your EGR won't work ;-)

If the shop does not have a free re-test go somewhere else. My Blazer did not pass the first time and I took it back and they re-tested it. I went to a Smog and Go and it was like $50.00. Bay area people have had it made for years. Welcome to the real world. I do think it is a bunch of crap though. The main reason for the Dyno is because it measures NO2... (NOX) You can not measure this without the car on a dyno.. Lots of Performance parts kick out a lot on N02. Oh well. Need to get a Republican who is race friendly in the Gov. office. VOTE...

There are some areas in the state that if you have your car registered there you will not get a smog notice. I know this for a FACT because I have done this and so have friends, for example, if you have a Lake house in a small town up in the mountains you may not need a smog if your car is registered to the address in that town. Again I know this tip for Fact and don't want to give exact details of what areas work like this but if any of your parents have vacation homes in the sticks give it a try!

ah the benefits of having an out of state registered vehicle.

I have thought about just going to one of these shops for shits-n-giggles to see what my car would do. I think I would make them have a heart attack, either that or they would just laugh at me as I pull in to the bay [Smile]

How do you change the address for your car without changing the address on your drivers license?

The central valley has been an "enhanced" area since 1997, might we want to ask some of the cental valley guys if the world has ended for them? Just dyno smogged a '95 Cobra(86k, bone stock) the other day out at school, passed with well within the limits. I think in some ways this test might actually help some with "lumpy" cams, no more idle test to worry about. The dyno test is not being done for the sole purpose of being able to test for NOx(NO1,NO2,NO3), the loaded dyno test more accuratly measures "real world" emissions.
When we become "enhanced", the days of leaning your car waaaaay out to get thru smog are gone, the leaner you go the more NOx you will make. Keep in mind this rule of thumb; NOx is heat in the combustion chamber, reduce heat reduce NOx(thats why shaving the cylinder head, increasing compression could fail you for NOx). The richer(cooler) you go the more HC and CO you will make. The test is not designed to fail well maintained vehicles, it is designed to fail cars that are in poor condition.

Oh yeah, lowering your car so it wont get on the dyno is not an exemption any longer, it was a really cool little loophole for awhile but guess someone caught on.
AWD cars and cars with non-disengagueable traction control are exempt from dyno testing and only have to do the old two-speed idle test.
