I think they call what is on a 98 Cobra a live axl right, and of course the 99 Cobras and up I.R.S. So what are the pros and cons for each of these? [burnout]

A better way to discribe a "live axle" is "solid axle"!!!...

A solid axle is better suited for drag racing...Its stronger and can handle more power because the axles them selves are not subjected change in geometry like the CV axle's on the IRS....

The "independent rear suspension"(IRS) on '99+ Cobra's was design to fit in to the location of the solid axle's mounts....Its not the greatest IRS system, becuase Ford had to design around fitting it into the locations of the solid axle..With all the after-market suspensions on the Mustang market you can easily make a solid axle Mustang corner better than an IRS Cobra..For example, there a couple of 99+ Cobra's running in the NASA'a American Iron who have switched to a solid axle..

Ford incountered many problems with the IRS in 99+ Cobra's..The main problem was "wheel hop"....Wheel hop is mostly cuased by the IRS axles winding up...From a stop the wheels hop really bad, this is not good for launching at the drag strip!...A positive of IRS is its a lot smoother thought the corners....Each wheel operates by its self, so when a bump in the road is encounterd and the left/right wheel hits it the bump was not transmitted to the other wheel like on the solid axle...

IRS is better for road racing and a solid axle is better for drag racing...
-John force has a solid rear axle on his Mustang..
-LeMans, F1, Rally, Indy cars all have IRS to handle the curves better..

I hope this info helped you out..
