I'm trying to fix the damn idle problem that so many people seem to have.

What my car does is wants to idle around 1,500 RPM's. If I tap the gas, it will come back down to 900 or so. But usually within 10 seconds or so, it will jump back up to 1,500.

I've done the 10-pin cleaning, APEX Motorsports supposedly replaced my TPS. Today I tried setting the voltage. When I first probed the TPS I got a reading of .74 volts. I've read that it's supposed to be between .94 and .98. So I got it to .95, then opened the throttle and watched the voltage increase. But when I released the throttle cable, the voltage went back down to .85! I increased it to .95 again and drove the car around a bit. The quirky idle was still there. When I got home, the TPS voltage was back down to .85!

The TPS is only a few months old. Why won't it keep the voltage I keep setting it at? I've tightened the screws down about as much as I can. I don't want to strip the damn things.

I know that if the TPS voltage is too high it causes a high idle, but does it also screw up the idle if it's too low?

scan for your codes, hi/low TPS will trigger a code.

.75 to .85 are good TPS levels. Have you cleaned your IAB? Is your MAF sensor good?

Unfortunately, I don't have a code scanner. Guess I should get one. I was just about to go clean my IAB. My MAF should be good. It's a Pro-M Bullet 75mm, only a couple of months old.

Well, cleaned out my IAB and the car idled great tonight. Figures it would be the last thing I check. I guess I didn't let the IAB dry out all the way though, cuz I got kinda freaked out when I started my car and a huge James Bond smoke screen of white smoke came out of my tail pipes, lol. Went away after a few minutes. It was embarassing as hell though.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

p.s. st5150, I take it you're a Prince fan? Me too, seen him in concert about 4 times.

You don't need a code scanner for '86-95 Mustangs!

A simple piece of wire would do. Ask AaronC on here, I once scrounged the ground for a piece of metal and pulled codes for him at the track.

As for Prince, yeah, I'm a huge Prince fan and a huge 2pac fan...I have a ton of unreleased stuff by both of them on my computer if you want to trade, but make a post in general talk or email me about it [Cool]

Well that would be hella handy, but of course I have a digital voltmeter, not analog. Oh well. Maybe I'll go buy one of those.

You don't need a analog volt meter.... it'll blink your check engine light:
