I'm thinking about buying back my 98 cobra FALEEN and wanted to know what the registering process is. It was an original CA car, went to Oklahoma, and then now I want to bring it back. Will it need a full DMV inspection?

My concern is that it has racing harnesses (no stock seat belts), no airbags in steering wheel, and a roll bar (if that matters). I just don't want to bring it back and not be able to re-register it here.

Any and all info is appreciated. Thanks!

I had to bring mine into DMV for an inspection. All they checked was the VIN and if all of the lights worked IIRC. The dude didn't say anything about the 5% tint on all of my windows or the Vortech. I had to get a smog separately and take the receipt with me. I did this back in 2010. I owned my car the whole time from when it was registered in CA and then canceled registration when the AF sent me to Germany and then I registered it in AZ for 2009 and 2010. Dang, I owned this thing since 2003.

Edit: Installing stock 3 point belts is a matter of a couple bolts and a visit to the junk yard. Not really a show stopper there, IMO.

Dmv just want to make sure the vin and odometer is correct. They also want to check if it has the sticker under the hood to make sure it pass Ca smog requirements...My car did not have that sticker but he said it was a newer car and it didn't matter. It was also a 98 model. Make sure you have it smogged before going with your car to Dmv. They could care less about the other stuff you mentioned.

all u are doing is registering an out of state car,not bringing it back from salvage

so all thats required is smog, and vin check

vin check is done for free by dmv,or u can have a licensed vin verifier do it for you, highway patrol will do it free as well, but not recommended on a modded car

+1, But if there isn't enough body vins on the car to satisfy DMV, they will send you to the CHP and they will tear down some of the car to verify the vins, I have been through this three times and had to deal with the CHP

Vin check and street legality check ( blinkers work, brakes work, functional head lights ) you'll also need to get a smog cert and pay the registration.

I dont think the air bag, or the harness belts will be an issue. its "frowned upon" to remove them, but not illegal by any means ( Not DOT approved )
