Separate box if you want. I did it like this.

1. Flat piece of cardboard large enough to cover entire face of wheel.
2. Wheel on top of card board.
3. additional piece of card board on other side of rim.
4. second rim.
5. additional piece of card board on top of second rim.
6. Shrink wrap two tires together.
7. install banding around pair of tires in X shape from top to bottom.

I've heard of people using Greyhound.

"What's this one in the middle?"
"It's for pussies."

I took them to a parts dismantler that commonly ships large pallet items. They did charge me for the pallet and packaging though which I didn't include above.

take the pallet to a local UPS or FedEx hub/sorting facility (not a store) or if you have a loading dock at your work or know someone who has one at their work, you can schedule a pick up at that location. But make sure to tell the carrier that you will need a lift gate if you do not have access to a forklift.
