An East Oakland neighborhood was boiling over with frustration Wednesday because of sideshow activity that turned violent last weekend when a 69-year-old man tried to take matters into his own hands.

Many city leaders and police have said they are also frustrated. While police want to find the people who hurt the man, city leaders want more police officers and residents want peace in their neighborhood.

The signs of a sideshow over the weekend were obvious Wednesday at the corner of Foothill and Macarthur in East Oakland.

“We can hear it. We can smell the burnt rubber,” said resident Mary Prime-Lawrence.

Just a block away on Sunday afternoon, residents had had enough.

“We don't have the protection that our property tax pays for,” said resident Emma Morton.

Dangerous sideshows are common in many Oakland neighborhoods. Residents say on Sunday they called police repeatedly, but that officers took too long getting here.

So, 69-year-old Jack Morton took matters into his own hands. Armed with this baseball bat, he told the drivers to leave.

“In one sense, I don't care what happens to me or them. It's got to stop,” said Morton.

That didn't go well as numerous sideshow participants attacked him.

“I've got a number of bruises and scrapes and the biggie in the head, they hit me in the head,” said Morton. “So, I got lucky.”

A neighbor helped rescue him, and firefighters rushed Morton to the hospital.

“They really rolled him in a sense. Gashes in his scalp. He now has staples and stiches in his head,” said Emma Morton, Jack's wife.

Residents say officers didn't arrive for a full half hour after their first 911 call on the sideshow.

Police say since they're so short-staffed, they have to prioritize calls for service. “If it's a life and death situation, it's going to be priority number one. As opposed to property crimes,” said Oakland Police Sgt. Arturo Bautista.

City council member Larry Reid, whose district includes the Morton's neighborhood, said by phone, “I can't promise anyone it's going to be a safe city until we can get more police officers.”

“My husband's life is worth something. If he's going to go down, it's not going to be because of these thugs,” said Emma Morton. “Because we're going to stand shoulder to shoulder and let them know, not here, not now, not ever again.”

Police stress you should never take matters into your own hands like Jack Morton did. Morton told KTVU Wednesday that he won't be doing it again.

Yup those thug mentality people are real tough when they are in large groups. None of them probably wouldn't have done shit if it they were alone. On top of that how the hell are you going to beat up a man that's older then your dad? But then again most of those kids probably didnt have a daddy to beat their ass growing up.

Oh, You know it. I bet a good portion of them are members or know members on this forun. Which is one of the reasons why i'm really starting to distant myself from this forum because i refuse to stoop down to their level.

So let me get this straight, A bunch of low life pieces of shit decide to "swang em" in a residential area, Where the people living in those houses have to WORK to pay for, They are disrupting the entire community and lives of people who live there. So a guy gets tired of it happening and goes out there to tell them to stop, but instead gets jumped and beat down by the low life scum bag piles of dirt who INVADED their community in the first place. This guy DESERVED to almost get beat to death for it?
