Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder in the first degree in the death of Odin Lloyd during his arraignment in Attleboro District Court on Wednesday.

Hernandez also faces the following charges: one count of carrying a firearm without a license; two counts of possession of a large capacity firearm; and two counts of possession of a firearm without a valid ID card.

Hernandez, who pleaded not guilty to all charges, will be held without bail at the Bristol County House of Correction and Jail.

The murder charge was announced at 2:44 pm ET, roughly six hours after Hernandez was taken from his North Attleboro, Mass., home in handcuffs after being arrested by the Massachusetts State Police and North Attleboro Police. The Patriots released the fourth-year Pro Bowl tight end less than 90 minutes after he was taken by police.

With members of Lloyd's family and Hernandez's girlfriend looking on, Bristol County first assistant attorney William McCauley laid out an extensive, detailed case against Hernandez:

» Police recovered evidence from Hernandez's phone, which included texts to the victim and two friends on the night of the murder.

» Prosecution said they have Hernandez on surveillance tape with a firearm in hand, while allegedly saying "you can't trust anyone anymore." Witness and surveillance tape in Boston also show Hernandez and Lloyd in a car together during the day of the murder. Texts showed Hernandez allegedly was mad because Lloyd talked to people that Hernandez "had troubles with" on the previous Friday night at Club Rumor.

» The prosecution said that roughly 6 to 8 hours of footage were missing from Hernandez's home security video system after the murder.

» Prosecution said Hernandez's home video that was recovered showed an unidentified person emerge from a car with a gun in hand on the night of the murder and walk through Hernandez's house before video footage went out.

» A shell casing was found in the car Hernandez rented. It matched the shell casings found at the scene of the murder.

» McCauley alleges Hernandez shot Lloyd three times right after Lloyd got out of the car. And then Hernandez is alleged to have stood over Lloyd and put two more bullets in his chest.

Hernandez's defense responded by saying the prosecution has a circumstantial case "that is not strong." The prosecution and defense agreed to a media gag order in order to avoid leaks and false reports that could come during the coming weeks. The Bristol County District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter stressed in a follow up statement that this is an ongoing investigation.

Hernandez's stunning, swift fall from grace was reflected in the Patriots' statement on the matter:

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

As a three-year veteran, Hernandez will be subject to waivers. Another team theoretically could claim Hernandez by Thursday.

NFL Network's Rich Hollenberg told "NFL AM" that three police cars, two of them unmarked, arrived at Hernandez's residence early Wednesday. As many as nine plainclothes police officers and two uniformed North Attleboro officers entered Hernandez's home, bringing him out about five minutes later. The tight end answered the door shirtless, but was taken away with a white T-shirt draped over his upper body and his hands cuffed behind his back.

The Patriots provided clarity about Hernandez's immediate NFL future when they released him. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the decision was a collaborative one involving the franchise's top decision-makers. It was also one that was made last week, not Wednesday morning.

The Patriots knew that if Hernandez was arrested for being involved at some level in a homicide investigation, the tight end was going to be released, according to Rapoport. There might be financial repercussions, including a large salary-cap hit in 2014. For Patriots coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft, this was their clearest route to putting the issue behind them.

The murder charge caps a series of events that started on Monday, June 17, at 5:30 p.m. ET, when the body of Odin Lloyd, 27, was found. An autopsy confirmed his death was a homicide, authorities said. Lloyd's family told The Associated Press that Lloyd had connections to Hernandez, although they would not elaborate. Lloyd was a semi-pro football player in the Boston area, having played for the Boston Bandits.

The police were seen at Hernandez's home multiple times in the following week, including on Saturday, June 22, when they recovered evidence from Hernandez's home after executing a search warrant. The full timeline of events can be seen here.

The NFL is monitoring the situation. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello issued the following statement to NFL Network's Steve Wyche:

"The involvement of an NFL player in a case of this nature is deeply troubling. The Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez, who will have his day in court. At the same time, we should not forget the young man who was the victim in this case and take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to Odin Lloyd's family and friends."

Looks to me like The Patriots aren't gonna win there division this year....... I wouldn't be surprised if Miami wins the division cause you know the Jett's are gonna FIND a way to loose games. [Eek!]

Patriots will find a way to win. They still have the best QB and Coach in the league. Plus they picked up Tebow. They got that division.

Well they could always break out the video camera.....
Brady's 2 favorite receivers are gone now. Who's Brady gonna check the ball down to? Hell do the Patts even have a 3 rd string TE? Maybe that's what Tim T gonna play....... That actually wouldn't be a bad idea now that I think about it LOL.

What a dumbass no matter what with all that fame and money you need to stay away from doing dumb shit. He's also pending a suit for allegedly shooting someone down in FL. I hate the Patriots but I'm glad they quickly cut his ass and stopped selling his Jersey, if more teams did that and the league as a whole stopped giving away awards and trophies to shitbags maybe more of them would get it together.
