I am looking to have my driveway, looking to add another 9ftx24ft of concrete. The work will include them digging up the dirt 4" deep, leveling, rebar, and pouring/finishing the concrete. The bid we got is $2200. Does anyone know if this sounds fair?

Got a few more quotes scheduled.

The guy that gave us the quote is in the union and has 30 years experience. Seems like he is a straight shooter and wouldn't take me for a ride but who knows.

No doubt. But there is a threshold that goes with that saying.

I've got a good friend that works for System Pavers. They do interlocking pavers all over in California. It will cost you a little more, but it will look good for life and add value. Plus they do in house financing with up to 5 years interest free. If you want I can get you a design quote. They'll come out, snap a pic of the area, throw it on the lap top and show you some different ideas for the space. If you like it, you can work something out or have then leave you with an estimate.

I would like to do that eventually. However, this is a home that will eventually be a rental.

Oh fuck pavers then. If my numbers are right you are paying a little over 10$ a square foot with that quote. That's a moderatly high estimate. It better be a diamond cert. company at that rate. Be sure to check the BBB report on any business before singing a contract.

Its right about $10 when I looked at it real quickly. I am okay with paying a little more if the work is good quality. He is going to send me some pics of previous work as well.

I think its sounds fair if its a 3day job (give or take)
with materials
Any skilled mechanic running
A business will be around $400-$600 bucks a day, its
hard if not impossible to be legitimate for under that.
Cash payment is always a bargaining chip.

HOME DEPOT DAY LABORER's

They know it all, I am sure they have had the experience of something as common as finishing a driveway as small as 9x24 @ 4" deep. You just might need to provide some of the tools. Rent a concrete mixer. Either that, or just rent a concrete mixer and do it yourself. If you are planning on using this as a rental property, I suggest you learn how to get in there and get dirty (given that you have that kind of free time) It should only take you one weekend.

My Personal Experiences/Sources: Family owns rental property, and I was the one doing the back breaking work similar to this. Also, I used to be the department head of Building Material and Lumber at Home Depot. I also worked at Lowe's a few years after Home Depot.

Not a rip off. Very expensive but worth every penny. Most experienced paver installer around. They actually did the entire front of the Anaheim Angels stadium as a large baseball diamond. Looks great, sees a ton of traffic but stays nice. You don't want a budget paver install. 5-10 years later you are the joke of the neighborhood.

Also let me add, if you don't have a decent property then it is a rip off. It's not something I would do to an Oakland home.

I definitely like to get dirty but this back breaking labor id rather pay someone that knows what they're doing.

lol! there are multi million dollar homes in oakland. I dont care if system pavers installed pavers in the sistine chappel. they are way overpriced. I would rather do stamped concrete. its cheaper and looks better... but hey thats just my opinion....

Looks better is an opinion yea. Personally I think stamped looks like garbage. Nothing but an imitation. Another thing, no matter who installs it the stuff WILL crack at some point. It's not a permanent solution. And yes I know there are some nice homes in Oakland.

Just make sure they prep the grade and compact it well. If there are cracks in the driveway now you most likely have a subgrade issue. Make sure they address that issue. The price seems fair to me.

Ironically I'm researching companies at this exact moment for concrete work too. I need a small 7'x6' section of my driveway replaced and the driveway widened 2'-3'.

Seriously folks, it isn't that hard. There are a bunch of "HOW TO" books at the front entrance of both Lowe's and Home Depot. The level of expertise on a small project like this is really low.

All it takes, is one solid and dedicated weekend.
