So I've been a flat rate tech for about a year now, and its got me tired of working on cars. Spend a ton on tools, Warranty rates are rape, customers don't buy anything, and the shop I'm at is frequently slow. Im thinking about going back to finish my accounting degree, but is 25 too old to go back? Should I just change shops? Opinions, good or bad are appreciated. I'm greatful to be employed and getting by, don't get me wrong, I'm just more ambitious than this industry seems it will ever pay out.

You're never too old to go back to school! Get that degree, especially since you're still young (yes, 25 is still young!) and have already started the process. That "piece of paper" that some people don't thinks important really is THAT important if you're trying to be someone one day.

Flat rate sucks unless your hella fast and the shop is packed. If you feel the shop doesn't hold any room for growth i say it's time to pass out your resume and look into your further expansion of knowledge. I'm 20, I was 18 when I started at wyotech, all my classmates where at least 25. Hell one of my closest buddies there was 42(?) it don't matter how old you are never stop learning

I second that.Really tears up your body.Back,knees,neck,hands,joints...etc.No one ever considers how much you have to contort your body to be a mechanic.A lifetime of working with your hands will damage things.3 surgeries here and they wanna open me up again.

+1 25 is a good age to go back to college. Especially since you are more mature now, and know exactly what you want to do. Accounting is a good degree to hold, If I could go back and start a new degree, I would do accounting. A lot of CEO's and Top dogs hold accounting degrees. I was in your shoes not so long ago, different job though decided to go back to school at age 28 and got into working at a hospital an sky is the limit there. I'm thinking of going back to school again now that I'm 31 just to move up, and as for wrenching is fun and all and I actually do side jobs quite often but your body those get beat up.

LOL...not in any way brother
heres my 2 cents
i was 34 when i STARTED college, did it do me any good ? no...but i also didnt finish my bachelors...i got 2 associates and called it a day
it took me a long time to realize that school IS a big thing
ive worked construction since i was 15, and i always did decent
i moved to being a city worker for the benefits at 24
i always thought if i ever got hurt bad enuff...i'd be dead or on disability
but i was wrong.... when i lived in cali i got in a bad motorcycle accident that took me out for 2 years
had i gone to night school for some time...and finished my civil engineering degree, i would be doing very well right now. my experience and certifications make me a boss easily
but i didnt finish the schooling, so im just a feeder fish
the longer you wait...the harder it will be to go back
and the longer you wait, the more you'll regret it later
trust me....its experience talking...and im 41 now

Run for the hills! Get the fuck out wrenching now while you are still young. I worked in dealer shops for many years and now I'm getting ready to go to a state university. It is never too late to start over again.

See what else is out there. There's always a better shop to work for. And plus now that you got a year under your belt, you can get ASE certified. Also, maybe start thinking about specializing in a certain area , there are tons of ways to make money in the auto industry without breaking your back to do it.

Too late? LOL... It's never too late for an education. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with wrenching. It's what I wanted to do for a living but life turned me in a different direction. My two best friends were techs and both have gotten out to do other stuff and don't regret it one bit. One is an instructor now and the other is working for some nuclear testing company.
