I just picked up a Motorcycle that appears to have been last registered 3-2-2006, so it appears to have been not registered since 3-2-2007. Any ideas how long it takes for registration to fall out of dmv's system? If I go to DMV online and inquire will it mess up it's possible out of system status?

Thanks

I think it's 7 years? Not 100% but that's what I remember reading somewhere... I'm sure you can google to find out for sure

I believe it is 7 years too. You can try looking it up online, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You could always go into the DMV and say you're interested in buying a vehicle and wanted to know if there's any back fees before you buy it. It doesn't reset the 7 year timeclock.

Yeah I tried the online thing and it says the information is invlid, but it also said this:

The license number and Vehicle Identification Number (or vessel CF number and Vehicle Identification Number) you have entered are invalid. Please recheck the information and resubmit. If this problem persists, to avoid late fees, mail the bottom portion of the billing notice with the fees and requested items in the envelope provided prior to the expiration date.

PLEASE NOTE: If a Renewal Identification Number (RIN) was not provided in the registration renewal billing notice you received for your vehicle, you are not eligible to renew your vehicle registration online.

So, either it's dropped, or it can't be looked up because it's not eligable for online renewal

I bought a Honda scooter from a buddy and I got a similar error message when I tried looking it up. Turns out it had dropped out of the system.

I don't think it ever "vanishes"

When it's registered I'd imagine you pay to current

it used to be seven years as long as not a single person ever inquires about it at dmv and no dmv person brings it up on there computer. every time a dmv computer checks on that vehicle it refreshes the system. but i think a couple years ago that's not happening anymore. as in dont expect a 5 year out car to be out the system in 2 more years. but if its already out its stayin out, they have no way to refresh or bring it back up.
