So I jus got hired at The Ford store in Morgan Hill I was told that I would start off doing tire rotations, oil changes, and used car inspections. I already work at Big O so oil changes and tire rotations are like second nature to me but seeing as how this is my first dealership job I'm not quite to sure on how to do the used car inspection's, so if any of you have any kind of helpful tips or advice I would most definitly appreciate it...thanx in advance

Congrats man. But at my job our inspections are mostly mechanical because we don't sell car or do body work but just have a tentative eye looks for leaks drips worn or torn bushings play in suspension components things you wouldn't want on a car if you were buying it.

Test drive each vehicle! Take it over bumps, hard turns, braking etc.

We go through pretty rigorous vehicle inspections where I work, pop the hood, check the lights, front back & license plate.

Make sure plate and mileage are accurate, check for CELs, TPMS, ABS etc. Check each hose, belt, PS/Brake cylinders. Make sure fluid levels are appropriate, test the battery and use brake fluid strips. Make sure all fluids are appropriate.

Lift the vehicle in the air, before the tires come off, grip the tire and shake it left-right, and up-down. If there is Left-right play, have a co-worker shake it, hold the inner, outer tie rods and find out where the plays coming from.

If it's up-down, check ball joints.

Look at front CV Axle boots, make sure they aren't torn/clicking if it's FWD.

With a large pry bar, pry on control arm bushings and check for seperation.

Look at struts/shocks for leakage, or if they are high mileage, if they are OEM.

Pull the tires off, look at brakes. Look for lines leaking from improper brake jobs where people hang the calipers by the line.

Heat checks, warped, cracking, glazed. If it has any of those, pull the calipers off and look at the pad's. The pad may be worn too, even though it visually from the outside looks good.

Before re-installing, grease the slide-pins and use a brush on the metal clips. Helps for a noise free brake job.

I used to work there as a tech. Nice place, but not that busy. If you're flat rate, you'll be hurting. They have a decent checklist for used vehicle inspections. Follow to the T, note everything no matter how little. Time is money and you got a check to get. Corey is good with the used inspections so don't be afraid to pick his brain. Tell him Matt says wassup.

Used car inspections are simple, most dealers have their own check list, you just follow the check list and make sure everything works. Anything not working gets repaired.
