Hi folks, I just received this letter from my home-owners association in Oakland:
Subject: Oakland Police Department Safety Advisory Regarding Craigslist Robberies
Oakland, CA - The Oakland Police Department would like to make the public aware of a series of armed robberies that have occurred to victims who have responded to a Craigslist ad involving a vehicle for sale.
Since December of 2011, the Oakland Police Department has received multiple reports of out of town buyers, not familiar with Oakland, who respond to a Craigslist ad regarding a vehicle for sale. The ads are usually placed outside the City of Oakland advertising a vehicle for sale in another City.
Prior to the final sell of the vehicle, the seller changes the location of the deal to Oakland, where the buyer is then directed to the upper area of Lake Merritt, near freeway 580 and Harrison Street.
Upon arrival to the designated location, the buyer is approached and robbed at gunpoint by two to five African American males. The public is reminded to use extra caution when conducting business with unknown individuals or in unfamiliar locations.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Oakland Police Department Major Crimes Section Investigators. The Oakland Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for these crimes.
Be careful out there folks and be smart!

I work in oakland and meet all kind of people, some really nice people and weird characters ... oakland is one of those cities where the naive and not so street smart people are taken advantage of. If something sounds too good to be true it most likely is.

I agree it's pretty bad but given the rarity of this occurrence, it could take a very very long time to land a successful hit by the cops. How many ads would the cops have to answer? 1,000? 10,000? 100,000?
Given that this is public information now, I doubt it will be as prevalent, but fugitives are pretty stupid, so who knows.

In 2008 I hit up some dude on CL for a supercharger , he wanted 2 grand. I went to Hayward with a buddy of mine (both of us armed) to meet up with this dude. He lived in the hood out there , somewhere I wasn't familiar with. Anyhow , I called him when I got outside some projects and told to come out .... He was like naw , some foo's already pulled a strap on me and tried to rob me for it... At this point I was feeling a little sketchy myself but I was like fuck it me and my bud were both strapped and I didn't want to have a trip out there for nothin. So we walked in , meet him . Did the transaction and the dude actually wanted me stay while he put each bill to the light to make sure it wasn't counter fit. All in all things went smooth , looking back though I wouldn't put myself or my homie in jeopardy like that again. Things couldve went wrong and it wouldn't have been worth it in the least bit.
