so ive been doing hvac for around 2 years now i have a good reputation being young and responsible and all but im starting to second guess if this is what i really wanna do for a living.. ive recently lost my job because of the way things are no adays my boss closed doors.. but i am union so its basicaly a waiting game so while im waiting on the out of work list i kinda wanted to explore my options in other fields.. mainly automotive... i have two years of tire tech backround so i gave sear autocenter a call explained what i know and they offerd a interview on right away.. so my question for you guys is.. has anyone ever heard of someone moving up the ranks at sears autocenter and making it somewere? like moving on with their experience from there and getting hired into a dealership? i currently have no diploma or ged my ged is in the works im only 22 so id rather make these changes now while im young rather then question my career at 30.. lmk what you guys think..

oh i see...in that case, i dont see why you wouldnt be able to move up, even without a HSD. but ive never worked sears, but i remember getting my car serviced there by a floor mechanic, then came back a year later, and the same dude was a manager..pretty quick.

i would stick it out with hvac.im in the same boat as you.working for hvac got laid off 3 years ago went back to work here and there in the past 6 months.no diploma or ged.thats most of the reason why i am not working my classification is material expiditer.if i was a pre apprentice there would be more opportunitys and more money.so i take it you havn't taken the pre apprentice test as you need your diploma or ged to take it.my advise would be to get your ged asap and take the test and start your classes.theres more work for pre apprentice, apprentice and up.good luck.

for the ac specialist you just need to take a test that places you on the list as a ac specialist aplicant.. then they can dispatch you.. ac specialist can do everything.. material exp is at the bottom they arent supose to even touch tools.. you cant turn out as a journeyman from ac specialist though i think.. you have to go threw the apprenticeship.. just some info in case you didnt know that stuff.. im local 104 to peninsula though not eastbay i should have transferd to eastbay i lived in hayward the whole time..

Go get your ged at least. If you were a boss would you hire someone without a diploma or ged? I know I wouldn't.

Yeah. Go get your G.E.D atleast. Its hard for even people with college degrees to get a good job nowadays. Without atleast a g.e.d/diploma, youre going to have a hard time moving up.

That's a good idea but you really need to make getting your GED a priority.

No excuses man. I worked 40 hours at my full time job plus another 25 at another job and went to school on the weekends. I worked 9 months straight without a day off. You can do it.

Look bro o appreciate your advice and all but like it was stated before everyones life is different good for you for doing what you did. This thread isnt about me getting my ged or diploma it was a question on a career of choice.. believe me i have years of work experience under my belt and definatly know the importance of schooling.. but like i said this thread isnt about that so once again if anyone has ever heard anything about using sears as a stepping stone please let me know. Thx.. edit: that wasnt sarcasm i wasnt trying to be a dick about what you have done i couldnt tell the hard work it took so dont take offense to that statement

No offense taken at all. A better step might be to go to a sears and ask someone who works there what they think. They could probably tell you if its a dead end job or a possible stepping stone.

Im a little confused here, when you say stepping stone are you looking to stay with sears and work your way up to management etc etc or more of a reference to show another company work history in that specific field. You might want to try some of those mom and pop quick lube centers they always seem to be looking for techs... as far as the hs diploma goes just say you have it no one ever checks. I have only been asked for it once, I brought mine in had it ready and wasn't even asked for it. Yeah its not morally correct but we all do un ethical shit once in a while.
