I ask everyone spread the word and sign this petition to maintain and hopefully increase the availability of Ethanol free gas.
Ethanol blended gas has been sold to the consumer on the guise of better emissions and decreased dependancy on foreign oil: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/fuels/additive/e15/420f10054.htm
"54 ethanol manufacturers petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA” or “The Agency”) to allow the introduction into commerce of up to 15 volume percent (vol%) ethanol in gasoline."
"Analysis of the motor vehicles’ emissions results at full useful life (120,000 miles) and emissions deterioration rates showed no significant difference between the E0 and E15 fueled groups"
"In EPA’s judgment, 2000 and older motor vehicles may experience conditions that lead to emission increases if operated on E15. These concerns include the potential for catalyst deterioration or catalyst failure, as well as materials compatibility issues that could lead to elevated exhaust emissions and exceedances of the standards"
Ethanol, according to the EPA themselves, has no benefit on emissions on newer cars, and will potentially increase emissions on older cars. It's being pushed on us because of pressure from Ethanol producers, and their friends in Congress:
http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2010-12-20-epa-ethanol-suit_N.htm
"The EPA has said a congressional mandate for increased ethanol use can't be achieved without allowing higher blends"
So congress wants to increase ethanol consumption at the expense of the consumer to make ethanol producers rich. Excessive Ethanol content in gas has been linked to premature engine failure, decreased performance, increased emissions, and decreased fuel mileage.
Ethanol quickly absorbs great amounts of moisture (water) carrying it into your fuel system and motor. It is a great solvent, cleanser and drying agent that can dissolve engine and fuel sytem parts made of plastic, rubber, fiberglass and aluminum.
Many automakers advise against the use of fuel with any ethanol blend:
http://www.fuel-testers.com/manufacturer_fuel_recommendations_ethanol_e10.html
Porsche, Audi, VW, Kia, Hyundai, Harley Davidson and Suzuki offer warnings against use of ethanol blends, and Ferrari and Ducati PROHIBIT use of ethanol blended gas in their vehicles. Some manufacturers have voiced concerns in the possibility of voiding vehicle warranties if the vehicles fuel tank contains fuel with an ethanol blend during routine service or warranty work.
Please take the time to sign the petition, and share this information anyway possible. Twitter Facebook and any other automotive forum you belong to. These fuels will ruin our older less sophisticated cars that haven't been designed to run on this crap. Even cars that have been designed to use it won't get better MPG or less emissions according to the EPA themselves. It's simply a money grab by the government and their special interests (primarily the ethanol producers)

Thanks Jared, good stuff
This is a frustrating situation, and I bet that the more people that make noise about this, the better chance we have at getting this issue addressed.
The energy available in the chemical bonds in a molecule of ethanol is far less than that available from the blend of hexane/heptane/octane/etc molecules that comprise 'gasoline'. Breaking the carbon-hydrogen bonds in the hydrocarbon molecules is the chemistry that takes place inside the combustion chamber and provides us with power, and with the supplementation of 10% ethanol, there is less power available and thus more fuel required per mile traveled. From that standpoint, it's far less efficient than gasoline.
The kicker is that we're approaching record highs for gas prices, without having the option to select a fuel that contains no ethanol. It seems like we've got two options - don't cut the gasoline with ethanol, or if you're going to sell us the 90/10 blend, drop the price accordingly. Thanks everyone. This is yet another problem the government is trying to pull behind our backs... it takes the people speaking up to try and get anything done about it.
and thanks Phil! very informative post and another facet to the problem that is ethanol blend gas...

Excellent post! This should be made a sticky so we could get every possible signature available from this site, and maybe passed onto forum members friends and families..
it makes no sense at all that this would be forced upon us if it has been proven that there is zero benefit to mpg's achieved, higher emissions, and detrimental effects to the performance and life of a vehicle.. As already stated, this is definitely a way for someone high up in politics that has stock in this industry to get rich. They are using their political weight to shovel this stuff on us, and expect us to just lay down and get Fcked.
