Hey guys, so here's the deal, I'm currently attending a JC with hopes of transferring to a UC.
As of now I'm only a couple of classes away from reaching the 60 transferable units and being transfer eligible.
I've got a solid GPA at 3.5, as of now I'm going to class three times a week. One of the classes I am taking requires A LOT of studying and time, as of now I am working 50+ hours a week at work and am doing good in the other classes except this one class that requires tons of time to study and all that good stuff.
As of now I'm on pace to get a D or a C in the class the way I'm doing right now, I want to drop it but it is too late and the best I can do is come out with a "W" on my transcript for withdrawn.
I really don't want to drop the class but I cannot afford to come out with a C or worse due to it not looking good on my transcript when trying to transfer to a UC.
But I have heard that a W is still better then a D or possibly an F!
What would you guys do?

Talk to a counselor. That's your best bet. Generally one or two W's are better than a D, but then again it depends on the school you're transfering to.

I had one "W" but covered it up by re-taking the class at another school. You should definitely get some advice from a counselor...if it's not a class related to your major, maybe it won't even matter ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

It's ok to get a "W". dont worry its not the end of the world.
Where are your transferring too? You should consider doing a transfer agreement with the UC you want to go too.

a drop with a W, then retake the class (different teacher?) and get a solid B/A will look WAY better than a C or D!
make sure you are completing the correct UC IGETC certification at the JC if you're planning to transfer easily, that's pretty much required and if you don't get it done at the JC before transferring you'll either need to complete it before you can graduate the UC, or need to take more general ed classes at the UC (wasted $$) to get it completed.

as stated, take the W as it is not part of the gpa calculation if u have time to retake the same course or an equivalent one.
if you're limited by time and still have the required gpa to get into your uc of choice even w/ a d or c, id say just take what u can get.

Going and talking to a counselor would be pretty tough since I work M-F 8am-6pm, unless I could talk to one over the phone?

Yeah I know it's not the end of the world, my only concern is how are the people who are going to be looking at my transcript when attempting to transfer take it.
Are they going to think to themselves, damn this kid dropped this class at a JC and it only gets tougher at a UC he must not be smart enough, etc....
For a long time now I have been wanting, no scratch that, I have been dreaming of transferring to UC Berkeley, mostly due to them being recognized as being one of the best colleges in California let alone the Bay Area. And because I would like to work part time for my current workplace so that I don't have to take out student loans and have to worry about paying them after graduating.
I live in San Leandro so going to the other local UC (UC Davis) is out of the question since I would have to move and live out there and leave home and what not.

This is the way I think I should do it, drop it get the "W" then retake it next semester or over the summer with a different teacher.

The thing is even a C would drop my GPA down to about a 3.3 or so, BS if you ask me, I think that if someone is to get a C then their GPA should stay the same, not go up nor go down...

The W will definitely look better since it won't drop your GPA. The C or D will not only look bad, but it could take your 3.5 down to a 3.2 or worse. As you know, a solid C or C- is lower than a 2.0 and it will affect your GPA even worse.
One thing you also need to consider is whether or not this is a major course or general ed. If you are transferring over with a declared major then that department will likely review your transcript. You getting a bad grade in let's say geology, won't look so bad if your not a science major. However, if this is a major course (especially in an impacted program) you don't want to risk the bad grade since the advisors will likely be comparing you against other students who have better grades in their major classes.

W is better. Afterwards you can have it dropped off your records if applicable. I went to UC Davis, but saying that, the school doesn't make you.

If I was in your situation, I would probably just double up on studying. If you get a W and seeing as were already at midterm stage as of last week, it isn't beneficial to retake a 5 month class again.
You can always talk to the teacher. Although I had a teacher that was incredibly useless and acted like this was our only class we had.

I know alot of guys on here are saying to withdrawl... but it might be better to get the C.
Is the class a general ed class or is it a major class? If its for your major, check with the schools you want to apply for and see what there standards are for major classes. Some UC/CSUs require you to get a B or better in all major classes. If that isn't a problem, keep the C and keep it moving. You don't want to do into a UC a class behind...plus a C isn't much of a deal breaker.
If its a general ed class...then keep the C.
If you simply don't have time to study and pull off the C, then take the W.

Thanks 50DEEP, yeah I can't risk having my GPA drop down to say a 3.2 from a 3.5. That would kill me. The course is a general ed course and does not go along with my intended major.

I could double up on studying, the only thing is that I studied my ass off for the midterm as short on time as I was and still didn't do too hot. That right there was a heartbreaker dude and dropped my confidence of doing well in the class big time. Now that was a 65 question midterm, the final is a 100 question test ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

Haha, yeah man I feel it, the thing is I have to keep my grades in check UNTIL I transfer into a good school, only then I won't loose any sleep over a C.

I'm not a college graduate but I'm currently completing as many pre-requisites and co-requisites I can, prior to applying for the Respiratory Care program at one of the local JC's. This is kinda tough, I think your decision should be based on the difficulty of the current classes in addition to the one your struggling in versus taking remaining classes you need to take prior to transferring in addition to the one your having trouble with. Despite having your GPA drop .2 just from getting a C in the class you're currently struggling in, you could always just sign up for an easy "A" course this summer and bring your GPA upto (if not above)your current GPA. The way I see it, you've come this far and unless you strongly feel like you'll do better in this same course next semester, I think you should hang in there and tough it out. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to do.
