So Im gonna be in the market for heads and cam. I just wanted some opinions. Ive got an 85 coupe, block from a 95 GT, stock bottom end etc. Has air gap manifold and 570 cfm holley street avenger carb, also have 1.7 rr. Im gonna get some long tubes and what not, but now for the cam and heads. Im thinking either some AFR 165's or maybe GT40's with port work, valve jobs etc...and a FR B cam or TFS1. Lmk opinions. Thanks.

AFR 165's is a good head for the 302, the b cam with the 1.7s will net about .510/.512 lift.. might want to add hardened pushrods and btr valve spring for your setup.. the afr's should have a 58cc chamber, i think the stock 5.0 is 64cc? so just by going with a smaller chamber you will bump that comprssion up nicley.. and i would buy the heads bare and buy all you own stuff for the head.. maybe even mill them a bit or use a thinner head gasket then stock to get even more comp.. would be a n/a beast!

Its just gonna be a street car, ocassionally take to the track for drag times but thats it. I would prefer all motor as well. Im on a budget so i need to get what i get and slap it on. Thats why im asking for cafords opinion. Ill probably have the heads and airgap manifold ported as well. [ December 15, 2010, 03:40 PM: Message edited by: 85notch5.0 ]

if your on a "budget" i wouldnt port those heads or intake for that setup.. just bolt it on and call it a day. atleast get some pushrods. and you can just order the heads complete and use the stuff they give you since your money is tight.. do you have any gears? what tires are you on? all those will make or break this setup [ December 15, 2010, 04:08 PM: Message edited by: highway21 ]

Currently Im on 18x9 Faleens with 245/40's. Might sell them ir trade for some 17's and get some DRs. As for gears, im pretty sure i got 3.73s. I have a mark 8 lincoln rear end and think those came with the 3.73s.

Very true, I have some edelbrock performers on my 66 with a holley 600cfm and I think my car runs pritty gud. That would be the best "budget" way to go

You should look around for a used set of AFR 165's .... Maybe even a set of 185's. If you do run a set of 185's, make sure you check your PTVC!!! trickflow heads are real nice too. You can find those used often for a good price. As far as Edelbrock heads go, I really like the Vic Jr's..... Those would be too much head for your combo though.
Good Luck

Look for set of used AFR 165's, the money you save invest in TFS2 cam. Lunati also makes good cams.
