So I want to get my contractors licence but don't really know where to start.
What are the pre-requisites?
How much experience do I need in the construction field? I have worked construction but only for about 4 months non-union.
I want to do this in order to make good money but most of all to help out my uncles who get jobs but then loose them due to not having a contractors licence.
There was a job to re-constuct a burnt down garage, my uncle told them 30k for the jod and the lady said "Fine insurance is going to pay for it, I just need your contractors licence..."
And boom there goes 30k out the window in these tough economic times.

Oh by the way I would like it to be in the general area not plumbing or electricity but general construction licensing.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CONTRACTOR LICENSE EXAM
An applicant to become a licensed contractor in California must be 18 years of age of older. He or she must possess the experience and skills necessary to manage the daily activities of a construction business. To qualify for the state exam, the applicant must have had at least four full years of experience as a journeyman, foreman, supervisor, or contractor in the classification for which he or she is applying.
You may receive credit for technical training, apprenticeship training, or education instead of a portion of the required four years of practical experience. At least one year must be practical experience. You must provide written documentation of any training or education claimed in place of experience.
All businesses or individuals, who construct or alter any building, highway, road, parking facility, excavation, or other structure in California must be licensed by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) if the total cost (labor and materials) of one or more contracts on the project is $300 or more. Licenses may be issued to individuals, partnerships, corporations, or joint ventures.
SUMMARY OF CONTRACTOR LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. 18 years of age or old
2. Pass the State Contractors Exam
3. $2500 or more of working capital
4. Bonded $7500 - Swimming Pool $10,000
5. Education and/or Work Experience within the Last 10 years
a. 4 years of building trade experience, or;
b. 2 years of building trade experience plus a 4-year degree in Accounting, Business, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, or Specific Trade.
In order to obtain a California contractor's license, a qualified individual must take two examinations. All applicants must pass the standard Law and Business examination. In addition, a qualified individual must pass a second text covering the specific trade or certification area for which they are applying.

What does it mean by $2,500 or more of working capital?
Bonded $7,500? Swimming pool $10,000?????
And does education and/or Work Experience within the Last 10 years have to be in the construction field????

2500 means you have to make that much a year to keep your license once you get it
the bonds are different for whatever you choose like plumbing elec etc it's how much bond you must have per license for the state it's also the same for your insurance I think like electrical is a 500,000 dollar insurance coverage just to give you an example. It is very difficult to get your license with 4 months experience unless you have proof of work experience you can get and if your under 24 it's even harder. Sometimes they want w2 s from your employers for proof or pay stubs it is very exspensive to get one and a general test is harder than a specific you have to know about every phase of construction and the rest of the test is law and code. It's no cake walk my suggestion to you is go to shcool for it there's one in Oakland but with 4 months experience I bight doubt shcool will help no offense but there's a reason you don't see a lot of 20 year old general contractors

Yeah I know its no cake walk for sure, I was told that they didn't require you to have any X amount of years uder your belt to get into the 6 month school in order to prepare you for the state tests.

So the school won't ask me for any proof of work experience but when I go take the state test (wherever that may be) they WILL ask me for proof of work experience, insurance, etc?

I'm not sure exactly how the process of school goes but usually they don't care cuz they want your money for there service. The only thing I know is when I was 23 I had 5 years electrician exp and they wouldn't let me enroll. It has been 3 years and I can't exactly remember the details of the process I would just call the school tell em you have the exp and they can explain the whe process fees and all

Well I went yesterday and they said that you do need a minimum of 4 years experience in carpentry, electrical, or plumbing, etc. OR 2 years degree and obtain a BA in accounting, business, etc.
So there goes my hopes, I have to get 4 years under my belt I think I'm going to go for it 40thgt, how hard is it to get into being an apprentice electrician?
