i was just thinking of all the fads we go through with car modifications and thought of a few funny ones you would consider hideous for today's standard. hopefully this list doesn't offend anyone who still sports this on their ride.
1. GTS black headlight covers. probably wasnt the brightest thing to have on your car driving at night. 2. saleen wings on foxes, dugan whale tails, better yet what about the 93 SC saleen wing that sits on top of the LX wing. 3. 5.0 GT bumper cutouts for exhaust tips. i used to think it was badass to be sporting a 3.5" rolled flat tip exhaust poking out the GT bumper with some chrome trim around the hole to finish it up. 4. body kits: whatever happened to DECH, erebuni ferrari style, jba dominator kits? stormin normal hoods used 5. rims: remember when you rolled on 15" kmc hammers and thought your ride was bad ass? a few years later those were topped by 3 star 17" anteras. momo, fitipaldi or OZ's were the shit. 6. flowmasters: these used to also be the shit back in the day but as we get more performance minded ppl are going w/ other brands. 7. chrome fender trim accents 8. gold plated emblems
can you think of any fads today that will become part of this list? personally i think this whole murdered all black look, clear corners or even the satin black paint finish will eventually fade off. teen years or early 20s i used to think saleen anything ruled over any look. might be a sign of age but i personally like the more subtle stock look with a few appearance mods like upgraded rims, lowering and maybe a wing but thats about it.

yeah thats true..didnt want to go into the lowe rider theme. vogue, dayton, la wire with crazy negative wheel offsets to make the car look like a toy car were the shit.
tires w/ colored tread that would mark the asphalt on a burn-out didnt last too long as ppl were using those tires to mark/claim their gang affiliation.

Dumb Fads: 1) Lifting any car higher than stock. 2) Installing rectangle exhaust tips on any thing that didn't have them from the factory. 3) Exterior speakers 4) Hoods taller than what is necessary to clear what is underneath. 5) Exhaust tips larger than most diesel trucks.

I remember all that stuff you mentioned venomous99. All the crazy offset rims sticking out way past the fenders. You forgot the angled chrome mudflaps or curb feelers. I remember being crazy into the lowrider style back in the late 80's, early 90's. I remember when people were pimpin out 89 Sentra's back then LOL...
I hope the raised up suspension & huge wheels style dies off 1 day, but at this rate, I can only see it getting worse.... [ December 07, 2009, 11:35 PM: Message edited by: EPIK ]

Front windshield stickers that go across the top. I think it looks stupid, but back in late 90's I thought it was cool.

I think the most popular are blacked out cars or black wheels. Deep dish wheels have become really popular also.

Oh yeah you forgot to mention talking alarms and auto roll down windows.
Hooking up a push button switch to your car alarm to simulate chirping sound or siren.

I grew up in New Mexico, so styles might have been different but I remember a few things that haven't been mentioned:
-Centerline wheels. Not sure what they are called, but the ones with no spokes or anything.
-"Slapper" traction bars for cars with leaf springs.
-Rear shackles for cars with leaf springs.
There was this total a-hole named Bruce Grimes at my high school that had a 70s Chevy Nova that was the perfect example... it was lifted to the sky in the back (with shackles), had slapper bars, and Centerline wheels that stuck out about 6 inches past the fender!
I never go to shut that guy down in my 68 fastback, but I would kill to go back to high school and run him.

I always liked those color coded momos.. And the first time I saw those 3 spokes was in Rkelly's video "Body's Calling" I ran out and bout some for this 3 series beemer I had at the time..One thing I notice youngstas dont do anymore is change their car for the seasons. Back in the day you had to have some color coded rallys to go on your car for the winter when you take off the spokes. [ December 08, 2009, 12:28 PM: Message edited by: N8 ]
