He did the same thing Oscar did. Agreed to a match weight of 145lbs. Meaning he has to come into the ring weighing 145. Stupid. Very few fighters agree to that and historically the bigger man that agrees to the catch weight then agrees to the match weight equaling that loses. Still should be entertaining and I still like Cotto's chance. But that just throws another chip into Manny's corner.

I think the catch weight was in discussion since the beginning. Back in July, I remember arum being quoted that the fight will be a catch weight in the 144-145lb pound range. I have not seen Cotto fight at 147 let alone 145 in years.

Catch weight and Match weight are diff. Catch weight is weigh in you have to weight this. Match weight is you have to make catch weight and come into the ring weight that. Which no one really does anymore.

Total BS. And you have to dig for this information. They dont make it readily available.

Arum was talking about catch weight and not match weight. Most discussions was about catch weight and not match weight. I remember reading about it back in July. Did a quick google search 1st hit.

LA Times Article from July

One of the potential sticking points has already been defined, Arum revealed Thursday. He said a consultation with Cotto's nutritionist has made it clear the catch weight must be in the 144-145-pound range.

"Cotto is a welterweight and the nutritionist is saying the lowest he can go is 144," Arum said. "Manny will be fine with that. He doesn't want a guy to get in there and injure himself by fighting at an unrealistically low weight."

Been snooping around but if you go to ESPN.com and read the last slide of the 12 rounds, they kinda slip up and say it at the end. I read some other reports from some reliable boxing resources and they slipped up too.

Click "Round 12" and read it.

That was from July. Lots of posturing goes on after the fact. You have to catch what isnt readily readable to get the real facts, or catch the slip-ups. These "match weights" are total BS and should be outlawed. They never advertise these for a reason. Look at the Oscar fight. Most didnt know until after the fact.

I do agree, the match weights are total bs. But, it's not surprising. Pac is Arum's cash cow. I would think he would do everything in his power to level the playing field in his favor. I speculate that that catch weight was always an undisclosed term.

I don't think it matters to Arum who wins because he receives a cut of both the fighters purses...Basically receives 40% of the total purse, the reason the fight was really made...I doubt he will weigh 145 the night of the fight regardless...I doubt they will make that a clause in the fight because if the night of the fight if either man does not make weight they will not call off the fight...They usually don't show up until 2hours before they fight and canceling a fight then would ruin Arum and whichever fighter chooses not to fight...I bet they don't show Cotto's weight the night of the fight...Mayweather did not weigh in on the night of his last fight...

He was smart, and he didnt have the "match weight" clause. All fighters weigh in before the fight, most dont disclose the weight simply because they dont have too. But I agree this fight not happening would ruin Arum.
