If they do decide to go ahead with the designated areas, I think they may work to an extent. It'd just be like street racing. Some people prefer the track and some prefer the street for the "adrenaline rush." Same concept basically.
But its crazy. The girl that got killed from San Lorenzo the other night, her home is just down the street from me. Just seen her like the day before it happened. Its completely amazing how stuff like this can happen in just a blink of an eye.

i agree..but it would still be great to have a place to be able to do donuts without worrying about havin to blow some doors off..i mean the streets are fun and exciting..but to be able to do it without worrys seems like it would bring more participants

Man kinda sucks what the sideshow has become. It really didnt used to be so dangerous. Was more of a car show and if it wasnt clean you either stayed back or didnt bring it. But now youngsters bring out anything and it stopped being about the cars. Its more about how stupid the individual can be. They have no respect or admiration for the vehicle so they no longer care if it gets bap'd or towed.
At least that is my take. But a legal area would be cool. Though not sure where they could pull this off at and have it be successful.

The difting section at HIN looked like a side show to me, and it was alot of people loving it from behind a fence (and safety guard) i think it could work.

plus the henn dosent help when some fucks like to mouth off then gets delt wit
i say the last friday night of every month at the oakland colusim pay 15 to get in 30 to swing it in a safe area and then let the fuckin tires start smokeing main!
if they allowed this one take it off the streets, 2 make it safer, 3 if your fuckin broke u cant come and play makes people be like fuck i gota go get a job! [ October 22, 2009, 11:51 AM: Message edited by: CAILFORNIAGT ]

I can tell you right now, the Oakland Coliseum is not going to want to have no parts of that. If somehow things can get back to being about the cars and not the people it will be alright.
People throwing up their turf and representing isnt new. Fights isnt new. It is just the disregard for the cars is new. My brother and I got caught up in a sideshow about 3 months ago coming from the club and it looked like a scene from mad-max. Hella battle tested cars, fucking child molestor vans and just some overall bummy lookin youngsters. No respect for themselves. So you know they wont give a flying fuck about you.

This has grown to be a significant enough problem in the city of Oakland where top officials are now looking seriously into realistic alternatives, which is very interesting to me from a political/cultural perspective.
On one hand I view this as an alternative to the sydeshow which may be relatively safer and reduce the rate of lives being lost. It will also remove the aspect of having to "run" from authorities. In addition I expect that it would reduce (but not completely eliminate) the sydeshow activity that occurs on public streets, major intersections, and residential neighborhoods in Oakland and surrounding areas.
On the other hand, I see this as taking a dangerous, unpredictable, and often violent event, and moving it to another location where much of the same will go on. The problem with the sydeshow is that it attracts a lot of irresponsible people. There will be alcohol, there will be lots of energy, there will be conflicts in the crowds eventually, and people will still continue to get hurt given the nature of the event. In addition, I have a problem seeing how this event will be funded, insured, set up, etc, given how enormous the liabilities are.
I would bet that if Oakland legalized the sydeshow in a place like the Oakland Coli parking lot for example, within a short period of time we would have our first fatality (whether it be vehicular, gun violence, etc), and we would be back where we started.
Regardless of this, the issue presented here along with the proposed solution is unique enough that I will be watching closely.
Also, I'm chuckling to myself thinking about how the rest of the world will perceive Oakland if it goes through with this, lol.

Yea I agree about being able to mess around and not have to worry about the cops. When I had my hatch, I always caught myself looking over my shoulder just in case. Its fun and all, but I really wouldn't want to put anybody in danger for having a little fun. Hopefully they can make an agreement for us to have an area to mess around in without putting many lifes in danger from the stupidity of for example..."running from the cops"...its just not worth it

I hear everbodys opinion, but when all the car clubs get togther and go out all we do is have "fun"!!! theres no what so ever. i mean sometimes we go down to 7th for hours at a time with the only shit talking is who can do the best donuts. I say it will work because if the city has part of it that means the opd will be there in full force. And no body shoots somebody to get caught so the violence will be at minimum

I am trying to imagine the logistics, lol. I realize that it's not that far along at this point, but these are the types of questions that are popping up in my mind:
Will cars be lining up like at Sac Raceway to go through a 30-60 sec donut routine?
Will the OPD be there?
Will there be an admission fee?
Will this go on during normal peak Sydeshow hours to get that crowd off the public streets? Or will it be during a more reasonable hour.
Who is going to host this event? Too Short with a mic directing traffic into the barricaded "ring" lol. I assume that there has to be some kind of personnel "in charge"
Will there be spectator stands (Like a HS football game)?
I assume that you will have to sign a waiver saying if you crash your car, its your own liability?
Will the Coli be serving cold beers at $9 like an A's game (lol)?
What do you have to do to get kicked out? And who will enforce the "rules" ? OPD?
The more I think about it, the more far fetched it all seems to me. I can't see OPD dedicating the amount of resources necessary to keep order.

only way I see it working is if they can somehow collar this thing, get sponsors and make it into a legit affair. OPD is not going to cover the cost for this thing and at 30 bucks or whatever a whop, people will still feel like they can go somewhere and do it for free. Plus the parkin lot pimpin would be outrageous at something like this and be more crowded that the actual event.
Wont work. I am with Luke.

Wont work! They are asking for some serious trouble, lawsuits up the wazoo. The ignorance of youth is not controllable. All you need is a small spark to start that inferno. Good luck Oakland! You know the media will be covering as well. We all know what happens when idiots have a chance to be on TV. You will see police in riot gear a couple hours after the 1st event.

yea the youth these days cant handle things like back in the day. Man I remember the flat land picnic that used to go down. Festival By the Lake, all that. The youngsters do themselves a disservice by being so off the hook.

I dont support this at all. It wont work. Its hard enough putting up with one idiot. Let alone 100 idiots in one place in cars doing donuts and going "dumb".
