When I got my manual trans my friend took a extra shifter and shifted the trans into each gear and spun the gears to see if it got caught on any gears that were chewed up. He did this for all the gears and looked on the front and end tail shaft to see the splines were all good.

First, check to make sure you're in the correct section of the board when posting up questions.
Second, do a compression test on the motor if you're concerned. When I did a compression test on it, all were within spec.
Third, know what you are looking at. If you need a 5.0/302 motor, know what one looks like. If you don't know, ask someone who does to go with you to visually inspect...and if it comes down to it, take a book.
Lastly, make sure you follow through with a purchase. If you don't want it, can't get it, just flat out decide to go it different route...let the seller know. Common courtesy is nice..
