I've done Autox on a beginner/for fun level and it's a lot of fun! You think you got handles??? Wait til you get on the course and see how poor of a driver you really are compared to these other guys with shittier cars...that's how I felt [Big Grin] But it's fun as hell and gets addicting! In my opinion, drag racing got nothing on Autox/road racing...it's the real test of how well you can drive your car [burnout]

I do road courses a lot and recommend getting a ride in Griggs demo car. Call them up and ask when they are giving demo rides in one of there street cars...well worth it. Like the other guy said it's very addicting and will give you tremendous confidence on a day to day basis as well. You'll see.

At least for road racing, start at the non-competitive club level. There are a number of clubs that offer experienced drivers as instructors at track events. You drive your car on the track with the instructor as a passenger. Other than a helmet and a safe car to drive, there are few or no other requirements. The initial goal is to learn the procedures for driving on a race track and more importantly, car control. With seat time and help you'll progress from beginner to intermediate to advanced. Beyond advanced is the race groups. No one is going to allow a beginner in a race group. How quickly you progress up the ladder is up to your effort and abilities.

There are a lot of different race groups and car classes. You'll get a much better idea of what's available and what's involved to get into a race group after you're exposed to it at the track.

NASA has a good program from beginner to race groups. Also check out

offers the lowest cost tracks events of all the clubs. Because of this they usually sell out 4-5 weeks in advance.
