I am.

That thing would work if the live wires are on different phases. But I highly doubt any houses would have plugs that close together on different phases. So my answer is no, that thing probably won't work for you.

I don't think I'd use it anyway...looks like cheap shit.

So what kind of costs would be involved hireing someone to install a 220 outlet outside at one end of the house to the box located outside on the other side of the house?

We have an outlet outside where we want to put the ac unit but of course it is not 220. Can that outlet be used/converted to 220? I don't want to burn down my house or kill myself. Distance from the outlet to the box is aprox 20'-30'. There is a living room and garage between them.

Do HVAC guys do this kind of work or is it outsourced when they do installs?

If its just running conduit outside the house and wiring it up then that's easy. Some people don't want anything run outside they want it all hidden so its either ran below or above. That usually takes a bit longer (sometimes). In all honesty it would be hard to make an estimate without seeing it. HVAC sometimes do smaller jobs if they feel comfortable. For larger jobs they definitely outsource it to electricans. However, that IS electricians type of work.

You really need to have an electrician come give you a quote. There's a lot of variables. What amp breaker does it need? What style plug? Do you have enough room to physically fit another breaker in your panel? How far is the spot where you need the receptacle from the breaker? Do you have enough capacity (amperage) to support the addition of the AC unit?

These are all questions that need to be answered by the electrician to give you an accurate quote.

Just to add, make sure the person that does it is licensed or you can run into issues with your home warranty folks (assuming you have one). Also check to see if you need a permit.

Good luck.

it's not a hard job if you know what you're doing the amperage of the breaker needed is displayed on the side of the ac unit. then you need to size the wire and breaker according to that, run your wire, at the outside ac unit you'll need a properly sized fused disconnect box.Electricians usually charge about $400.00-$500.00 for this job. Trust me when i say i've been doing this for years.
