Anyone know of a law concerning the catalytic convertors on OBD2 vehicles? Is there a law saying you can't change your cat with an aftermarket cat if it goes bad on these vehicles?

there is a certain amount of years the car has to be before you are allowed to put aftermarket. not sure on how many though.

It's actually 10 years, 100,000 miles and the emissions components are backed by a federal warranty. At least when I was in the business it was that way...

You can replace the cat if it was damaged also, just say you hit a huge speed bump and it broke the cat apart inside.

If it's for your GT isn't it OBDI? Call the State Referee 1-800-622-7733.
They have techs that are car enthusiasts and will answer your question about how to modify your vehicle and meet all legal requirements.

Its for my 96 Explorer, last time i went to the state referee they argued with me about if a vacuum line is supposed to connect into the barometer sensor on my 5.0L in my Jeep. They failed me because they thought they were right and that it was supposed to have one. I had to prove it didn't have one the second time. I'd rather listen to you guys than them

fwiw I had to pay $700 installed for an OE cat y-pipe on my `97 sierra about 5 years ago. OBD2 in CA is a big fucking pain in the ass I went to a dozen muffler shops and none of them would install the $35 magnaflow cat that I brought in with me.
especially sucked since that $700 cat broke apart about 2 years later, fucking waste of money [ August 14, 2008, 02:11 AM: Message edited by: Blind ]

thats what i don't want. I don't want to pay more than 300 dollar, supposedly either a aftermarket cat is coming out or something is coming out in a couple of weeks that i can replace the cat with so i am just going to wait until after fire season.

most emissions warranties are 8 year or 80k. there are just regulating cat replacepents mainly so u don't have to keep buying them every 2 years cuzz most aftermarket ones out right now are junk. tell your mechanic to read the news letter and he will see the new cats will have to have a better warranty. good for us
