7 dead, 4 injured in apparent drag-racing crash in East
7:06 a.m. PT Feb 16, 2008

ACCOKEEK, Md. (AP) — A car plowed into a crowd that apparently gathered to watch a drag race on a suburban road early Saturday, killing seven people and injuring at least four, police said.

The car went out of control on Route 210 around 3:40 a.m. and hit people standing on the roadside, Prince George’s County Police Cpl. Clinton Copeland said. A tractor-trailer that came by shortly afterward may also have struck someone on the road as it tried to avoid the crash, he said.

“It’s probably one of the worst scenes I’ve seen,” Copeland said. “This is a situation that could have been avoided, and it’s a very tragic situation.”

Four people were taken to hospitals, Copeland said. Their conditions weren’t immediately known.

Route 210 has two lanes in each direction and traffic lights about every 150 to 200 yards in Accokeek, about 20 miles south of Washington.

Investigators were working to piece together the chain of events and had “more questions than answers,” Copeland said.

Prince George's County? Damn, I just read a thread of a big accident from the motorcycle forum in that same area! WTF? That's crazy!
Here's the other recent one caused by cops chasing motorcycle:

All that to get out of a speeding ticket!
[Mad] Now when they catch him he'll be facing murder charges along with at least 100 other things. Nice way to ruin so many lives over something so stupid..... I hate tickets as much as the next guy but would never run from a cop to get out of one.

It's time for the country to do what Obama's own father did.

From another board...

quote:
This is from ashley- an F-bodyhideout member. She lives in Md. and got some first hand info that wasn't being released in the news concerning the tragic street-race accident that has been all over the news.

"I'm going to only make one post about this because it's getting pretty crazy on some other forums. I know some people that were there yesterday and got the stories, funny thing is all the stories from people there are the same and are different from what the media is saying (never believe everything you see on tv).

As some of you know since some of you have been to MIR it's a long open straight stretch of road. The racers had already launched and the race was just about over, hence why people were in the road to see who won and there was absolutely no smoke. The story about the "ritual burn out after winning is complete bs, that doesn't happen. Just as the race was ending a guy in a crown vic came flying in somewhere between 75-100 (in a 45 MPH zone) with no headlights on and he was drunk. If he had his headlights on and hadn't been speeding he would've easily been spotted since it's a straight stretch of road. But the reason for no headlights and speeding was because he was being chased by the cops, but you won't hear this because there is a no chase law in that county. But as of right now the only charge against the driver of the crown vic is a DWI.

These guys just don't go anywhere to race. They find places that they can go that are only going to endanger themselves and the people around them, but it's the outside elements, such as this one you cannot control. This is why I don't like street racing and I am very glad my boyfriend came down to visit me this weekend or else it probably would've been him. We are lucky to find out that one of the guys we knew was there was fine, but if he had stretched his arm out he would've been hit.

This was a very big money race that is why there were so many people there. It was for $5k and people came down from NY. The person that the semi hit was actually only the top half of one of the guys from NY that had been hit just before by the crown vic splitting his body in half. It was one of the most brutal and disgusting accidents.

All the cars were domestics, so watch out everyone now, it won't just be the ricers with modifications police go after now, even though it was exactly the street racing that killed them.

My condolences go out to all the families of those that were hurt and I really hope people that street race take a step back and look at all the elements of things that can happen."
