i need some advice. i just helped my boss pick up a '90 jeep wrangler that he plans to use for various activities. he plans to take it around by towing it behind his chevy avalanche and he wants me to help him a find a front end hitch setup for the wrangler.
do you guys have any recommendations? will this be a simple bolt-on front hitch? besides the hitch, is there anything else needed to tow it safely behind an avalanche? thanks.

The easiest way to do it is to get a towbar setup. seen here on my jeep after some hollister breakage
here's a link to a similar setup...

it just requires that you drill two holes in the bumper for the towbar brackets (which you can leave on all the time for easy hookup)

storage is the problem, but if flat towing isn't a good idea, i will recommend a trailer instead. what are your thoughts? [ February 02, 2007, 12:43 AM: Message edited by: stangin' ]

Shift the 4x4 drive into neutral. That might only be for the older Jeeps though i've never driven a Wrangler.
I would get the tow bar if your going to tow it around behind a truck or something. A trailer is good too.

I don't like flat towing. Trailer is definitely the way to go. I don't put any unnecessary miles on the rig it all goes on the trailer. And I dont' really have to worry about blowouts. Plus my trailer has brakes. I also have a winch hooked up to my trailer so I can winch my rig onto it incase something breaks.
I've towed with just about everything. You name it I used it. And trailer is without a doubt much better than a tow bar.

the transfer case on the YJ is built for that kind of towing. on the newer TJs they say you need to start the jeep up every few hundred miles to get the fluids circulating but on the YJ this is not necessary. just hook it up, put the tranny and transfer case in neutral and go! you can buy the magnetic lights at an auto store or at Uhaul i'm sure
oh there is one thing... you need to have the ignition to "ON" so the steering wheel won't lock up! [ February 02, 2007, 05:02 PM: Message edited by: NiftyWhiteFifty ]
