This is news to me and may be old news to some of you. Being a Cingular Customer though I've proudly signed up and hope you do too. This is real not some fucked off spam scam crap!
Jan. 13 was the 11th anniversary of the abduction of Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old from Carrollton, Texas, who was kidnapped while riding her bike and subsequently murdered.
Out of that tragedy, radio and television stations in all 50 states agreed to follow the AMBER Plan and to broadcast news bulletins about abducted children.
An Instrumental Role
Cingular Wireless played an instrumental role in developing the Wireless AMBER Alerts program. This is a partnership among the wireless industry, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the U.S. Department of Justice, that lets wireless customers receive AMBER notifications as free text messages.
Statistics show that the first three hours after a child's abduction are most critical to recovery efforts.
Wireless subscribers can provide additional eyes and ears in this search.
Doing Your Part
As a Cingular user you can do two things to help recover abducted children in your community:
Sign up to receive free Wireless AMBER Alerts at www.wirelessamberalerts.org or text the word "AMBER" or "Subscribe" to 26237 (AMBER) on your handset, then reply to the return message with the word AMBER followed by your 5-digit zip code. You can enter up to five zip codes, but in most cases your home or work zip code will suffice.
Spread the word. Tell your customers, friends, your colleagues and family members about this service and recommend that they enroll.
Wireless AMBER Alerts are geographically specific, making alerts relatively infrequent.
Consumers who enroll will receive only AMBER Alerts. No unrelated messages will be sent, and information will not be shared.
