Anybody have any seal's mess with you when your diving? We dove Monterey on Sunday and on our second dive I had two harbor seals that wouldn't leave me alone they kept pulling my fins off and bumping me. It was cool but sucked also because we were fighting the current and surge, made it a little hard with my fins constantly being tugged on and pulled off.

My housemate is a "dive master" here in Santa Cruz. He told me that his friend got bitten in the head by a harbor seal last week. It was pretty funny, the guy wasn't seriously hurt, but it went through his hood.

wow, they usually hang out w/ you in monterey but never that aggressive.

did you dive from san carlos beach?

if you leave furthur down cannery row, at the hotel, you can get into some sea otters almost every time.

your from vacaville...do you go abbing at all?

i used to hit fort ross all the time. love it there.

Yeah several times. This was at Point Lobos near Carmel couple years back. Wife and I are both dive masters. I got lots of photos. We hit Monterey about once a month.

We went to Macabee(sp) beach. I've never dove there and it was packed with people. I should have known something was up. On the way down there my father in-law told me he forgot his gloves so we stopped and got some. I gave him some shit for that [Smile] then we drive thru Monterey and check out the sites and they all looked good but crowded. So we hear Carmel is nice an flat. We head that way check it out and decided to dive Butterfly house. We unpack the Yukon start getting ready and I hear my father in-law say shit I didn't bring enough weight and this is after I asked him before we left if he had any spare weight because I might need two pounds. He told me he had just enough for him. So I picked up some when he got his gloves. Anyways after he said shit I follow it up with Mother F@cker I don't have my gloves. So we pack everything up and head back to Monterey to buy gloves and weights. So then we just decide to dive Monterey since it was getting close to noon. First dive was great second dive right before we get in the water my father-inlaws mask breaks. Good thing I had a spare [Wink] then we get in and my mask does not want to seal at all for the first half of the dive. Then we encountered the Harbor Seals. I can see how a bunch of little things could turn into something bad. Anyways were going to Pt Lobos on Dec. 30 and will probably dive Monterey this up coming weekend.

nitrous_bob I've never been abbing' I dont like any kind of Sea Food.

Hey Bunchmyfunky, you dive dry or wet? I have 2 drysuits. Even use dry gloves. Dry is the only way to go. Especially when using argon for dry suit inflation. MMMMMmmmm taosty warm. I hear you on the little things though. Wife and i have it down to a sicence now. Mask problems have been eliminated by carrying a spare mask in one of my leg pockets on the dry suit. Never had a problem but have the redundant mask just in case.

I like Lobos a lot for shore diving. We tend to stay away from Monterey unless we head out on a boat. To many students and beginners in the water all the time.

We only dive with Nitrox as well with High pressure steel 119's. Want to go doubles but have decided to spend the money yet. You would think with the amount of crap the wife and I have , we run a dive shop out of our scuba locker. 3 or 4 wetsuits, 4 dry suits, 5 or 6 regs, 4 or 5 BCD's, misc gloves, booties, hoods' knives, canned lights, back-ups lights, tools, weights, about 12 tanks (need to get rid of some if anyone you know is looking for some)the list just goes on an on. W

The Manta was in Maui a few years back. I have seen em in Monterey but not that big. This thing was like 8 ft wingtip to wing tip. Here he is from the back side.

No not at all. Also depends on what kind of sharks they are too. These were Gray reef sharks. Not very aggresive. When I took those photos there were probably 25-35 in plain view. Wife and I went into a cave and found a 5ft white tip reef shark sleeping on the bottom. We grabbed his tale to pull him out to get a good shot but he silted up the cave and we coulnd't see shit to take a photo.

Sahrks don't scare me although my nerves get a little rattled when on the surface down in Carmel/ Monterey, Always seem to think of white sharks but we have never seen one in the water [Big Grin]

Tiger sharks might bother be some, very aggresive. Bullsharks too. But overall my heart rate doesn't even go up when I see a shark. Now the 1st time I ever saw one, hell yeah. I was excited but not scared. I'm affraid of the shit i can't see like devil scorpion fish and shit like that that is all cammoed. Hard to see and have come close to grabbing something thinking it might be a rock [Eek!]

Doesn't look like much does it. They are masters of cammo. They are not out here in Ca. Warm water like Hawaii. They can get pretty big. They are not aggresive but protective. A dead give away with these things is that they will stick out their fins and on back side (armpits) there are red yellow and orange stripes. They are very poisonous. If you grab one and get stuck, your in some bad trouble.

Titan Scorpian fish are the same way but they are more orange in color. Lots of poisonous fish in the sea.

Stone or Rock fish, sea snakes, Jellies without skin prtection, Urchins (watch your step and where you grab) Lots of stuff out there

The one I took the photo of played hide and seek with me then started tugging on my fins. He came up to my head from above and started to scratch my head with his flippers. Then he moved right in front of me, grabbed my mask and peered inside. He started to blow bubbles in my face to. It was cool. I have seen them swim down to leopard sharks who were resting on the bottom and blow bubbles in they're face.

Kill you? Not sure but hurt you real bad. I saw one and didn't know what I was looking at till he flexed and saw his colors. Like throwing up gang signs. Still didn't know what i was looking at other than a fish of some sorts. It wasn't till we looked it up in a fish ID book that we went [Eek!] We have gotten pretty good at find crap. Octos are my favorite though. Find one in a hole and work for several miutes to pull them out. I have great photos of those but can't post them from this computer [Frown]

If you think you will be diving for awhile, get the drysuit. You will not be disapointed! Make sure you get the proper training for it as well. It takes some getting used to but worth every penny. Careful of what you buy too. There is a company out by my house which makes them to custom fit. They are called Ocean Vendors. Great suit.
