My brother in law has a 2004 Mustang 3.8 & recently got a check engine light. The code pulled up as P0453. What does the code mean & how do we get it fixed....

Thanks [patriot]

PO453 is an EVAP code which is detecting a high pressure input. Possibly a defective gas cap but I am not promissing anything since I think the check engine light would actually say that there is a leak if that was the case. Did your brother in-law possibly just put gas in the car? Either way you should take off and try to re-tighten the cap and see if the light goes away.

If I am wrong somebody please correct me [patriot]

The light has been on for a minute, but I think he just found out the code recently. I will try to erase the code with my Xcal2 & then see if it comes back.

Thanks [Big Grin]

dustin, the p0453 is a FTP(fuel tank pressure) sensor code. there is either a wiring issue between the sensor and the pcm or the sensor itself is the problem.

Thanks Mike. Whats the best way to figure out the issue?

Light a match and drop it in the tank. Depending on the size of the explosion u can tell the pressure. Then use the insurance money to get a V8

Drop the tank. The connector on the fuel evap tubes is either off or broken. It is square and grey in color.

So sure on this one, I'd bet a 24-pack. [Wink] Had the same exact problem with a car recently.
