351w blocks are good till about 800rwhp+. what are your goals???? if you want to do it cheap id run a set of AFR 205's, victor jr intake, holley carb, and a plate of n20, and a nice solid roller but thats just my $.02
I currently have a 357 with TEA ported AFR185's and the spyder intake with a custom cam and 42# injectors with a plate going on and its fun!!!!!

Big difference between 400 and 600 RWHP, you need to figure out what you want first and go from there.

To answer your smog question- technically there is no way a 351W swap would be legal unless you got it from a 95 Cobra R. However I dont think the average smog tech could tell the difference between a 5.0 and a 5.8 if you didnt get to crazy with it(ie no exotic intakes, missing smog pump, fancy fuel rails, AFPR etc). Guess thats not exactly in line with 600rwhp. Personally I would throw legal heads and a smog legal blower on the 5.0 motor, get it to hook and have fun it wont be 600rwhp but remember the 351W is about 75lbs heaver than the 302 as well and no need for a "hookup" come smog time is also a bonus. Guess you could also swap an 03-04 cobra motor into you fox, just a thought. [ May 26, 2005, 08:25 AM: Message edited by: Jimbo ]

Well if you dont mind putting the stock setup back in every two years than your only limited by how much you can spend. I'd bet you could probably get 400rwhp out of a smog legal combo. Maybe a pair of the CARB legal AFR's, a CARB legal Vortech, CARB legal intake and even throw in a cam.

Go with the 351, the torque gains are awesome. I ran 13.3@109 with small GT-40X heads, and F cam and a box intake on top of a 9.0-1 comp 351, until it got hurt. For a basic combo, that thing ran hard with those extra cubes. Just imagine what a real racy combo would run! One jab of the throttle and you will forget about all the little 302 pussies.
Put it this way, a lot of guys step up to 351's, how many go back to 302?

I ran 13.3 at 103 w/ a stock 302, gears, slicks, TB/MAF, shorties. 11.90 at 115 w/ H/C/I 120k mile 302- 315rwhp/329rwtq.
The 351 will be a very nice torque gain for daily driving and have obviously more potential than the 302 when built up.
BUT- you have to be ready to deal w/ smog if you go w/ the 351.

to do 600rwhp you will pretty much need some type of power adder, which one do you plan on using? blower, turbo or N2O...

351w is fun but you can go hi 10's with a stock 5.0 short block and right top end combo usually twisted wedge 2.02 head, holley systemax at least a f303 cam and a novi2000 blower 42lbs injectors t rex and 255 intake 4cyl springs less sway bar in the front some 28x10.5 mt drags.you'll be flying without winds this is a good setup and is still streetable cheaper and more easy to find a 5.0 shortblock outta a 88 t-bird.they never see past 4500rpm and there automatic familycars.virgins waiting to be broken in good luck with the 351 hope i helped

Without a real block, a stock 302 will split in no time with that combo. Lemme guess, you'd throw a 4cyl T-5 behind that too..right?
It's all about $$$$...and how much you wanna spend to go fast. Got deep pockets? There's plenty of routes to go. "Baller on a Budget"? Do a H/C/I on a 351w (roller-based block) and have tons of fun with it.

hahaha f n funny every one has a problem with a budget setup. guess i'm lucky then.,been driving on the same stock 89 shortblock for 4 years with a simular combo trickflow twisted wedge2.02/1.60 ported gt40 intake f cam paxton sn93 9psi longtubes stock isuspended w/3:73 running 7.20 @98 on the norm in the 1/8 full weight 88 notch using the second t5(5.0)ram heavy duty clutch 30lbs injector, bbk fpr,t rex,255 intake, paxton fmu,msd6al, i still have the 5115 nos kit still in the car but use it only when money is invovled to pay for my next 4cyl t5 johnb. its only a 75 shot but cools everything nice car is not tuned so it'll run quicker in a couple weeks my friend with a 93 xchp coupe runs a stock 5.0 t5 with only long tubes,gt40 intake/paxton sn92 11psi w/ race impellar, fmu ,24 injectors, spec 2 clutch ,pro 5.0,3:73's 28x10 et runs best of 7.47 @92 mph stock cam/heads w/isky springs. that about as simple as it gets ..5.0 motors are as cheap as buying a clutch around 150 on half off day at pickapart complete motor less distubtor outta a mark 7 or lincoin lsc, some cougars and t birds. A sn92 or sn93 is in no way similar to a Novi 2000, nothing wrong with budget combo's as long as they hold together.

First off, TW's won't work on a stock block with a F cam unless you notch the pistons. SN paxtons aren't even CLOSE to a stock S trim as far as boost goes, I know...I've had both. Novi 2000? A whole other ball game. There is nothing wrong with a budget setup...we've ALL been there. You want budget? Try a stock bottom end 302, notched pistons for RPM 2.02's. TFS stage 1 cam. Ported Edelbrock intake. 36'ers with a SQ-trim pushing 10psi. Stock supension, 3.55's, full weight (read: working AC and full interior) 93 Cobra. 11.17@127..and with a 35 shot? 11.02 That's budget. Oh, and what's with your 1/8th mile stuff? You racin' in Alabama or somethin'?

It's cuzz for the remainder of the 1/4 he had to coast it since the valves kissed the pistons and the SN cooked the oil and killed the ceramic ball bearings.

Your friend is very lucky then.
Are you running the 351 as a NA combo, no SC right? Just the Nitrous? A TFS stage 2 or Z cam would be a good match. And no, the T5 won't last long but my vote for a clutch is a RAM.

same here..maybe you think you tried this setup or heard a story but i have no valvtrain problems what so ever sn93 blower maybe the cheapest avalible but can be modified to put out over 12psi.. yes ball bearing, which is easy to rebuild. the novi2000 pulleys are actually interchangable with the paxton,a 10 rib yes but works the paxton is a very very simple bolt on and can be upgraded to the vr4 head unit now what, the vr4 will put you in the 10 sec zone.fo sho But there are a few stock 5.0 combos that do as well. p600,t trim, i know you gotta cut pistions with afr 185's just do your homework.so you can make your dollars stay in you wallet. the 1/8 mile in california is irwindalespeedway :rolleyes:very nice track. you can get you best 60ft times here i love the 1/8 mile when racing someone equal to you its alot more challenging its a off the line race and if you miss a pwr shift, bog out,or don't drop kick the clutch at the right rpm when staging, you will more than likly lose..budget .4cyl t5 won't last long but gives you the i dont givva fuk confidents to start BaNGiNg gear with out letting of the gas and 1st gear is like a 4:10 ratio. but if got the cash go for the 351 time your done i'm sure you'11 have a torque monster. johnb you made like a least 20 people feel "lucky" today with your valve clearance scare.i drive my stang daily and to the track every week if your every down in socal look me up so i can show you whats up. cdt what are you talking about? the sn92 is a self contain oil blower goof balls
