When i accelerate to 3000 or so and then let off without shifting my oil pressure is dropping pretty low. do i have bad valve guides/seals?

no, but your bearing tolerances have probably opened to the point that the oil pump can no longer maintain the required oil pressure unless you rev it up.

in order to maintain oil pressure, the motor has to have bearing tolerances within a certain tight range. As the motor wears, the tolerances open up and the motor can no longer maintain a decent oil pressure.

if you are very lucky, you can replace the stock oil pump as it could be failing. If you can't maintain 20 PSI at idle you are probably in trouble in the not too distant future

10-40 should be alright. I usually run 20-50 synthetics in a performance pushrod car. On such a new motor it is odd to be losing pressure as you are. Are you going off the stock gauge or an aftermarket gauge?

Mine has been low for over a year. WAY under 20psi. At a light after I hammer it, It will go ALL the way down but as soon as I accelerate its fine. Obviously thats not "right" but I wouldnt do replacing the oil pump yet. I dont even see how you could do that without seriously jacking up the motor or removing it all together.

it is off the stock gauge. i have n autometer one on the way. also my car did this kinda before with my stock heads. i changed them to my tfs high ports and it went away. but they only have 15,000 or so miles on them.

You support the motor with a brace and drop the K-member out and front suspension. It's about 8 hrs of work

If it matters I have had 20psi at idle and about 38lbs at 3000rpm and above since I bought my 86. It now has 188k on it. I have put 23k on it since I bought it back in november. She runs goods but I am having a motor being built for it just in case. [Big Grin]
