Hey guy's, do any of you know what that big heavy "thing" is that has 2 bolts and mounts right behind the pinion gear/driveshaft flange on the axle...

I took mine off, a long time ago when I installed the gears, it looks like it could be some sort of harmonic balancer for the axle or somthing...It weighs about 15-20lbs!!...

Do I need it or is it one those after thoughts from Ford like the Quad shocks?...

It's something like a harmonic balancer,
after changing gears no longer needed, just make sure to re-install the plate that mounts on top of it,It's what the pinion snubber hits.
if you leave it out the rear end will rotate up and hit the floor board.

that's the axle dampener. If you're not running the stock gear ratio chuck it. I haven't had one in years and haven't missed it.

Its nick name is the "dog bone". Its purpose in life is to sit in the corner of your garage and rust while giving you a 7 lbs weight savings that is ofset by installing a drive shaft safety loop [burnout]
