So its Sunday and I'm bored, so I thought I'd do a write up on my 8 point roll bar installation from a few months back. After several trips to Sacramento raceway running high tens the track officials had enough and told me I really need a roll bar. So I purchased a competition engineering 8 point roll bar kit from AM(last time I buy from them) I ended up getting the mild steel kit. I also purchased a 2015 nhra rule book to help make sure it meets spec.

 -

So I stripped the interior out of it and mocked up where the mounting plates would go and removed the sound deadener with a heat gun and scrapper
 -

Then I used a angle grinder with a buffer pad to remove the paint in the areas where we would be welding

Then when everything was prepped and cleaned i took it to father in law so we could level the car on blocks and start welding the plates in.
 -

When the plates for the main hoop were welded in we cut and mocked up the hoop and rear bars, we decided to put the rear bars as close to the shock towers as possible and position the plates over the rear subframe.
 -
 -

Next up was to install the seat and mock up the height of the horizontal bar for the hoop.

And while the seat was in we found the right height and angle for the door bars. One of the only issues we ran into was the positioning of the diagonal bars. The rule book and the install directions weren't too clear on the placement. So we mounted a plate to the lower rear seat frame as it seemed to be more sturdy then the tunnel floor. Later we found out it was in fact supposed to go to the floor on the trans tunnel.....oops. so once EVERYTHING was tacked in place and was where we wanted it we got to work and laying down beads.

And after it was all welded up, I cleaned all the piping and sprayed it with a light grey in an attempt to match the interior. I think it came out ok.
 -

All said and done I'm happy with the results and glad i can go back to the track. Now i just need to remove some weight to compensate for the weight of the roll bar. Eventually I might put in some swing out door bars to make getting in and out a little easier.

An looks like you did a clean install.

It doesn't need to. But if you don't then you need mounting plates welded to the floor then the pipe gets welded to the plates.

Thats actually where it said to put the bars was on the trans tunnel. Is it supposed to go somewhere else?
