A smart cat would never let a dog kill it, I'd go with a kitty for your daughter.

Are reptiles acceptable? If so, Look into a Bearded dragon. By far the most gentle creature.

Awesome idea. What 4 year old girl doesn't love dressing up her bearded dragon for a tea party?

All jokes aside, rabbits make pretty decent pets. I had a holland lop as a kid and it was a pretty chill pet. I'd be pretty hesitant to get a 4 year old something small like a hamster or Guinea pig. I'd also avoid reptiles until they're older as you have to make sure you wash your hands after handling them as there is a risk of contracting Salmonella. I don't know about your 4 year old, but mine still has his hands in his mouth constantly.

they're known to "carry" salmonella. its not a 100% guarantee. besides, just have them wear gloves.

When I was 15 I had a bearded dragon. Very simple to take care of and they just sit there most of the time. My girl also had a small ball python at the time. Snake would be a bad idea for a 4 year old though

Fish. Something extremely low maintenance.

I wouldn't want a child, especially a young child, being responsible for the health and well being of another living creature. There are full grown adults I wouldn't trust with properly caring for a pet.

I would start off with a gold fish. Make some kind of trade up deal where that turns into an aquarium with multiple types of fish. see how long that last and whatnot and just keep getting some better and better.

The trade up program!

For sure start with something low maintenance. Plus you can teach her about science with all the water PH balancing and whatnot. [Smile]

My son had a turtle named tuck he liked a lot. Fish are another good one, or maybe an aquarium.
